The next step in the process for the Art Residency project was to start sketching out the different elements.  And then to paint.

Here you can see the beginning of A. S. Rhodes Elementary school, the Gazebo, the entrance sign to Shenandoah National Park and a barn.  Look closely and you will see the Courthouse is sketched in as well.

And today I actually start the project with the kids at A.S. Rhodes Elementary and Hilda J. Barbour Elementary.  Can’t wait to meet the 16 kids at each school.  Hopefully they will be excited about painting and about the project.

OMG!  What a night!  The artists at Delilah’s greeted children with Halloween candy.  We thought we had plenty this year but once again we ran out after an hour.  Here is Fortune Teller Jackie giving candy to the wonderfully dressed up children.

We were so overwhelmed by the crowd that we had to take turns.  Here’s Fortune Teller Kelly helping out.

The lines wound down the street.

And when we ran out of candy the Fortune Tellers went to work telling the “future” to  all those brave enough to dare.

Many thanks to Jackie Bourque who did a great job with the kids telling wonderfully uplifting fortunes to the little ones.

And the kids went all out with their costumes.  There were some of the cutest kids there.  Thanks to everyone who came out and made the Hometown Halloween a huge success.  And we hope to see all of you back at Delilah’s for your holiday shopping!  🙂

This is the painting that I did at the Festival of Leaves last Saturday .  It’s not quite finished but I’ll tweak it a little in a day or two to finish it up.  Thanks to everyone who stopped by Delilah’s during the Festival of Leaves.  It was fun to see everyone.

I didn’t want my Adult Art Class to feel neglected since I have been posting so many of my young students lately so here is Shelly and Marlene painting away last Wednesday Night.

And Jean and Pat were right across the table working just as hard.

We have such a good time together painting.  If you have ever wanted to learn to paint or if you are a painter and want to join a fun group, come paint with us on Wednesday or Thursday evenings at the Blue Ridge Arts Council on Main Street in Front Royal.

Yesterday afternoon I attended an event for the Blue Ridge Arts Council (BRAC) here in Front Royal.  This event is held every other year and several artists are invited to paint on location while attendees watch their progress.  Then the painting is auctioned off for the benefit of  BRAC.

Here is Michelle Summers hard at work.

And Charlie Logan….

And Elizabeth Sholder working on her painting.

Kathy Chumley working on a wonderful piece.

And Wilson Webb with a gorgeous painting of the trees with the house in the background.

And I didn’t catch Chris Stephens at the easel but this is his painting. Terrific!

The event was enjoyed by a large crowd who munched on wonderful food provided by local businesses including our great friend Katie Tewell of The Apple House.  Many thanks to everyone who helped make the event a success and for supporting the Blue Ridge Arts Council and local art.

Taking a Break

I took a break from painting over the long holiday weekend.  I mainly worked at the shop, Delilah’s, and enjoyed time with friends and the boys.

It’s hard to be a “neat” painter.  This is the easel I used for most of the paintings I work on at home.  It’s messy but I need my stuff close at hand in able to work effectively.

And it takes a lot of “stuff” not only for painting, but also for framing, matting, hanging, promoting, marketing, etc.  An artist’s studio or work area often is filled with materials and “stuff”!

It’s always exciting when a show goes up but the coming down is kind of sad.

This was my favorite piece in “Minds Wide Open” abstract show that just ended at the Blue Ridge Arts Council.

Now to find a place for all these large paintings.

Maybe some will go to Delilah’s….and some may go to other shops.

The gallery is so empty and sad.  Good thing that the Arts Council  member show goes up this week.  It’s a terrific show featuring new work by arts council members.  Don’t forget to stop in and see it.  The opening reception will be Thursday at 5:00….same night as the Art Walk downtown.  Plan to come down for a great evening of art!

Join us from 5-8 p.m. tonight for the 3rd Thursday Art Walk.  I will be painting at the Blue Ridge Arts Council and I invite you to join me.  Tonight’s theme is “Minds Wide Open” and we will be working on abstract pieces…and you can join in.  I’ll have all the supplies.  You just come ready to paint!!!

And abstract doesn’t always mean non-representational.  As you can see here there is a representational element to abstract art as well.  Come on down and see more.
