SamplerWe had Part 2 of our Embroidery Class last night at The Studio-A Place for Learning.  I got my homework done so that I was ready to learn the next stitches – filler stitches.  (See Part I info here.)

Sandra Charles is an excellent and patient instructor.  The class had a terrific time showing what we had done so far.  And we can’t wait to get together again in the near future to show our finished work to one another.

It’s great to be able to try another creative form when you are accustomed to doing one type.  While I love painting I also love learning and trying something new.  Give it a try.  Check out the schedule at The Studio and try something new!

20140926_100913Last week at my evening adult classes I started a painting.  Sometimes when I feel that everyone is on track with their paintings I will paint during the adult art classes.  On Wednesday and Thursday I worked on “The Talking Beagle”.  It is an acrylic painting on 16″x20″ canvas.   I have always loved the way Beagles “talk”-they throw their heads back and just let go!  I love it.

This painting is about 75% finished.  I still need to get in some details and the finish the face.  I am hoping to get to that during this weeks class.

Oxbow Sunflower CollageI spent a delightful morning painting a sunflower field at a beautiful farm north of town yesterday.

It has been awhile since I have been out to paint and I had almost forgotten how much I enjoyed it.

As with most Plein Air paintings that I do this one is almost finished but will get a little adjustment now that I have it in the studio.  You can see the step-by-step progress in this collage.

Sunflower View I  is an oil on canvas panel measuring 11″ x 14″.  SOLD!

Samples of Rothko's color block paintings

Samples of Rothko’s color block paintings

Mark Rothko (September 25, 1903 – February 25, 1970) was an American painter of Russian Jewish descent. He is generally identified as an Abstract Expressionist.  You can read more about Rothko here.

He is most well-known for his “color block” paintings.

This is my favorite Rothko quote:  “It’s a widely accepted notion among painters that it does not matter what one paints as long as it’s well painted.”

Practice piece for stitches we are learning

Practice piece for stitches we are learning

Art comes in all forms.  This week I began a piece of embroidery in a class that I am taking at The Studio.  I love the possibilities of working with thread and muslin.  You can make any design that you can imagine.

We worked on learning different stitches as well as started a small little sampler where we are practicing the stitches we learned.  Sandra Charles, our instructor, is a wonderful fiber artist and has so much patience helping us get it right.

This is the her sample of the piece we are doing for class.  Hopefully I will have mine to share after we finish our last class next Monday.  We’ll see.

And don’t forget that we have so many creative classes at The Studio.  It’s not just painting!  Check out the calendar here on our website for the most up-to-date information on upcoming classes.

Painted Bucket

2014-09-17 13 42 00Last week I shared with you the buckets that we painted at the Pioneers & Primitives Retreat that I taught at Sassafras Farm in WV.  (See that here.)

This is the bucket I worked on while there as a sample for the class.  It’s a little larger than a regular bucket but I think it would be great to hold dog toys!  SOLD!

TVOR Demo Painting Completed

I took a little time to work on the demonstration painting that I did last week at The Village at Orchard Ridge. (Read about that here and here.)  Often when doing a demo painting I get it about 75-80% completed.  I like to take questions so I talk while painting and I can’t always concentrate on details to finish up.   That is what happened with this one.  I used a larger canvas than usual because I wanted everyone to be able to see it so in the 50 minutes that I painted I did get a lot done but still needed to wrap it up.

Here are the photos side by side to see the difference.
