Yesterday, Kym and I appeared on Warren County Today radio show with Mario Retrosi.  We talked about the Art Residency project with the 4th graders, the “Bark for the Park” Art Show and Sale at the Community Center, and the upcoming art shows at the Blue Ridge Arts Council.

Well, radio really works!  One  of the things I said while talking about the dog park was that if everyone who has a dog or loves dogs would just donate $20 or $25 then we would have the money we need to begin building the park.  When we came out of the studio 30 minutes later there was a wonderful lady waiting to meet me.  She heard us talking on the radio and wanted to bring a check by to donate to the park project.  You can hear us on Valley Today by clicking this link and then clicking on the Thursday, April 21 date.  http://www.theriver953online.com/page.php?page_id=41558

As promised yesterday I am going to tell you about our Sunday dog visitor.  I was in the cabin reading and looked out the window to check on the boys barking and I see a tail sticking up from the bank of the pond.  And I think that dang Lincoln is in the water again after I just bathed him!!!  But then I realize that Lincoln and Jed are both standing on the bank and the tail is still sticking up and that is what they are barking at.  Turns out to be a cute little chocolate lab puppy.  She had on a collar and a tag but no name, just a rabies tag.

So I go in the cabin to try to call the Sheriff’s Department in Moorefield to see if they can look up the name of the owner when I hear voices outside.  I think,  Aha!  the owner is here.  But it was a neighbor from on the hill.  Luckily, he recognized the dog and knew who it belonged to.  She had come from the other end of the farm, about a mile and a half away.  He took her back to her home but not before Lincoln and Jed got to sniff and run and play with her for a while.

This week I worked with the 4th grade students at Leslie Fox Keyser Elementary School to produce the 175th Anniversary Painting.  The first day Doug Stanley, County Administrator, reviewed the history of Warren County while I gave an overview of the material we would use in the paintings.

I also did a quick demo of some of the brush strokes they would use as well as a color mixing demo of certain colors they would use.  They seemed fascinated.

Then on the second day of the project they started painting.  I will share more of their work soon.  Today was their final day of painting and Hagerstown TV came to do a story.  The kids were so excited.  Take a look at the story here.

The next step in the process for the Art Residency project was to start sketching out the different elements.  And then to paint.

Here you can see the beginning of A. S. Rhodes Elementary school, the Gazebo, the entrance sign to Shenandoah National Park and a barn.  Look closely and you will see the Courthouse is sketched in as well.

And today I actually start the project with the kids at A.S. Rhodes Elementary and Hilda J. Barbour Elementary.  Can’t wait to meet the 16 kids at each school.  Hopefully they will be excited about painting and about the project.

As if the “Bark for the Park” series wasn’t a big enough project for this year, I have started another one.  I am teaching an art residency at the five elementary schools here in Warren County.  We will be painting a piece to depict the 175th Anniversary of Warren County.  I’ve had to do quite a bit of research in order to tie the project into the History SOL’s for 4th grade as well as come up with interesting pictures for the kids to paint.  Over the next few days I will show the progress of the sample painting that I did.  Then, hopefully, I will be able to share the paintings that the kids finish.

The finished  painting will be 4’x4′.  Each of the 16 students selected at each school will paint one 12″x12″ panel.  In order to plan a layout, I laid out a paper drawing with 16 equal squares.

Then I wrote in what I thought would work.

After having the initial design idea in place, I prepared the actual canvas that I would paint the sample on and started laying in printouts of the ideas on the canvas to see if they would work together.  It was sort of like a puzzle.  Stay tuned for more….

Mama

Today would have been my mom’s 69th birthday.  We lost her in 1994 of cancer at the young age of 52.

She was a beautiful person.

You can see by the teddy bears on her shirt in this photo that she loved kids and was a kindergarten teacher.  She loved it!

I recently went through old photos and scanned a bunch of them (thanks Carol for the scanner!).  So I decided to post several of Mama today, hopefully in chronological order.

She was a wonderful pianist and taught kids after school.

Here are some other photos of her over the years, most with family members, including me.

I miss her everyday!

As you make your plans for shopping after Thanksgiving, please keep in mind the small businesses in downtown Front Royal, especially Delilah’s Art & Gifts, 105 East Main Street.

We will have our biggest sale everon Saturday as part of Small Business Saturday, a day to come together in support of the small businesses we love.  Remember these shops and restaurants employ our neighbors, reinvest our money close to home,  and are the heartbeat of our communities and local economies.

And Delilah’s is making your holiday shopping more affordable as everything in the shop will be 10-80% off!!!

And if for some reason you can’t make it by the shop Saturday, just give us a call or email if  you have seen a painting on the blog that you would love to have.  Every painting will be 50% on Saturday only!  That’s right….50% off.  If it is still available, it’s on sale!  I know, that’s crazy but that’s the way it is.  So come in or call for the painting you’d like.

OMG!  What a night!  The artists at Delilah’s greeted children with Halloween candy.  We thought we had plenty this year but once again we ran out after an hour.  Here is Fortune Teller Jackie giving candy to the wonderfully dressed up children.

We were so overwhelmed by the crowd that we had to take turns.  Here’s Fortune Teller Kelly helping out.

The lines wound down the street.

And when we ran out of candy the Fortune Tellers went to work telling the “future” to  all those brave enough to dare.

Many thanks to Jackie Bourque who did a great job with the kids telling wonderfully uplifting fortunes to the little ones.

And the kids went all out with their costumes.  There were some of the cutest kids there.  Thanks to everyone who came out and made the Hometown Halloween a huge success.  And we hope to see all of you back at Delilah’s for your holiday shopping!  🙂
