Yesterday was busy for The Studio. Art Camp in the morning had the campers painting a beautiful Monet inspired sailboat. The kids did a fabulous job on this one. And we even had a little time left to explore palette knife painting. We pack a LOT into just three hours in the morning at camp.
As soon as camp ended we loaded up the supplies and rushed out to the Shenandoah River State Park to hold a Paint Party for Lord Fairfax Community College Workforce Solutions Team. They painted a wonderful view from the park of a road that leads to the River. Even a huge impending storm couldn’t dampen our spirits. This enthusiastic group was a joy with which to paint. Thanks everyone! Check out more about “Team Building” here.

Yesterday morning we had a wonderful opportunity to go behind the scenes at the National Gallery of Art and visit with Gregory Jecman, Associate Curator of Old Master Prints and Drawings. He pulled some drawings and pastels by Degas, Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, and Morrisot that we were allowed to examine up close. It was a rare experience.
We were amazed to see the detail of the work so close up. The National Gallery offers many programs like this that a free for the asking as long as you make an appointment in advance. For art lovers it is a must! Here are the wonderful Degas’ and a Renoir that we saw yesterday. There was so much to see that I will share the other things we saw in the next few days.

Claude Monet’s painting of a Venetian palazzo, “Le Palais Contarini” , dating from 1908, sold for $30.5 million at Sotheby’s this past week.
And it was a bargain compared to the iconic 1906 painting of water lilies, “Nympheas” that sold for $54 million becoming the top sale at the recent auction. Inspired by the lily pond in his garden at Giverny, the work was the second-highest price for a Monet at auction.
