Mary Cassatt’s Little Girl in a Blue Armchair, 1878

Close-up of dog in Cassatt’s “Little Girl in a Blue Armchair”
There is an exciting exhibit coming to the National Gallery of Art in Washington. Degas/Cassatt opens on May 11 and will feature 70 pieces by the two Impressionists that will highlight their friendship. The curators there recently discovered that it appears that Degas may have actually painted a few strokes on the well-known Cassatt painting “Little Girl in Blue Armchair”. It’s fascinating. Read about it here.

Sleeping Lincoln
I love this painting that I have seen many time but a couple of years ago, right after Lincoln came to live with us, I had to take a double take when looking at the painting. It seems that Lincoln was a wealthy French dog in a former life. He has been reincarnated and now lives with us in Virginia. The pup in the painting looks just like my sleeping Lincoln.
Don’t you think?

Cookie Jar Painting
I am often asked how I find things to paint every day. I never have any trouble finding something to paint. There are just so many things all around that I want to try to paint. From time to time I will set up an area with my camera and shoot lots of photos of “common” things for reference photos. I recently did this with a cookie jar that had been given to my parents as a wedding gift and that my mom gave to me years ago. I always have fond memories of it because Mama always had it sitting on the breakfast bar in the kitchen with something good in it for us when we got home from school each day. I treasure that cookie jar.

First Saturday Paint Party – April 5th
The best thing about Paint Parties is that you never have had to paint before to turn out a wonderful piece of art. We work in a “paint-along” method where I demonstrate step-by-step what you do. Step 1 – the Background and Shadows; Step 2 – the pot and leaves; and finally the flowers.
This is how we will do it this Saturday at the Paint Party. It couldn’t be easier. Come join us sometime and create your own beautiful painting. You can learn more about Paint Parties by clicking here.

Speaking to Girl Scouts about art
Yesterday I was asked to speak to a group of Girl Scouts about being a full-time artist. They were a great group of girls who toured the Blue Ridge Arts Council before our session and had several questions about art. I was working on the demonstration painting for our 1st Saturday Paint Party so they watched as I completed the flowers. They enjoyed it so much that they want to come back and do a little painting. So we will meet again later in the month!
I did finish the demo painting for this Saturday’s Paint Party and there are still a couple of seats open if you want to join us and paint this little geranium painting. Contact me today.

I had such fun yesterday crocheting this Hippo. I didn’t have a pattern just a photo so I had to take out several rows and try again but I think he turned out pretty good. I don’t know why but I think Hippos are cute! This guy is going to Delilah’s so you can come by and see him there or if you have a little one that would like a soft Hippo toy as a friend pick him up to take to them. 🙂

Katrinka’s Birthday Paint Party
We had a fabulous time yesterday at Katrinka’s Birthday Paint Party. You all did a great job on your paintings. I love it when the attendees come in and haven’t painted before and are a little nervous about what they are going to do but then they leave with a terrific painting.
You can learn more about upcoming Paint Parties open to everyone here. Or book a private party for you and your friends.
