I took a Bob Burridge workshop on Saturday at Art of the Carolinas. Here are some scenes from that afternoon. Bob is all about working fast and loose…no small brushes…he uses paper towels and his fingers. I love the effect!

Yesterday it was hydrangeas that I painted using the knife. (This one is SOLD!) I am loving this method. Can’t wait to get home and really spread out and do some of these on larger canvas. We leave today after having a really great time at Art of the Carolinas. I have two friends who came with me and they have had some interesting classes as well. It is so much fun to be the student for a change!

Still enjoying Art of the Carolinas in Raleigh. Yesterday the Trade Show opened so I spent several hours browsing the vendors and picking up supplies. Lots of great bargains. Boy that was FUN!!!! Then I had time to work on more paintings. Here is another palette knife piece that I did. This is fun too! The Black-eyed Susans is on a 12″ x 12″ canvas with frame and is SOLD! The Tulips from yesterday is a 9″x 12″ and is available also. Email me at kwalker@kellywalkerstudios if you can’t live without them. 🙂

Each year there is a big Trade Show & Workshop held in Raleigh NC called Art of the Carolinas. I’ve attended several times but haven’t been able to make it in a few years…until now. I came this year with two friends and we are enjoying the workshops. Yesterday I went to Kimberlee Maselli‘s Expressive Floral with Palette Knife class. She’s a great instructor helping each of us to learn to use a variety of knives to get shapes and designs to make a lovely floral painting.
We first worked on paper with a few different shapes and then she turned us loose on a canvas panel. She had fresh flowers available for inspiration. I chose the tulips. It was a fun and different way for me to work. Can’t wait till the next workshop. More from Raleigh tomorrow.

Dragonfly on Wood Type by Duane Keiser, oil on board, 7″x6″
About 10 years ago I read an article in USA Today about a Virginia man who started the “Daily Painting” movement. Duane Keiser was bringing art to everyone by making small paintings each day that were affordable and easily accessible online. At the time I was trying to decide which direction to take….either work again in the non-profit world or paint full-time. The concept of daily painting was intriguing to me so I decided to give it a try. I started daily painting the very next day and soon after started the blog, Life of a Daily Painter, and have been doing it ever since. That was in 2006…and it’s been a terrific journey that has led to The Studio. I continued to follow Keiser’s blog. He started painting much bigger pieces and less of the small paintings but from time to time he still does small pieces that he offers through eBay. And while I have bid on them in the past it is only recently that I acquired one…..and I am thrilled to have it. This is a terrific example of his small works.

Today would have been Truman’s Birthday. He was a good ole boy! And we miss him. But he had a wonderful long life and we think of him often and smile. His full name was Truman McCain Perot….he was politically correct. LOL! He would encourage everyone to VOTE today. Happy Birthday Truman. We miss you!
