Jacket Complete

The Sandys have completed the jacket. Sandra Charles, on the left, is a fabulous seamstress and she spent a few Fridays at Open Studio teaching Sandy Schwalb to sew. The jacket was made with antique fabric given to Sandy by her aunt in New York City. It’s beautiful but a little fragile with which to work so it was a challenge. It turned our terrific. Nice work girls!

Kids Sew Quilts

At the second day of our Sewing Camp the kids finished their Rag Quilts. They chose their fabrics on Monday and started sewing and yesterday they finished them. They were so proud of their work….as they should be! They learned to choose fabrics, how to sew a pillow and a quilt, how to sew by hand with needle and thread and how to use machines. They even got to try a 1946 Featherweight. And when I was asked if I bought it new I had to laugh. Kids!!!

Pillows at Sewing Camp

Yesterday we started our sewing camp for kids with two young people learning how to sew with a machine and by hand. We made a pillow. The kids chose their fabrics and we made beautiful reversible pillows. And we got started on a rag quilt. Stay tuned for those today!

Kids Should Learn to Sew

machine This year for the first time we are offering a “Sewing Camp” for Kids at The Studio on Monday and Tuesday, July 29-30. I learned to sew when I was very young. My grandmothers and mom taught me first and then when I was in school my Home Economics teacher took me to the next level. This is something that I have used my entire life and is a skill that all kids, girls and boys, should learn. Why you might ask? Sewing not only helps you to produce something useful and creative but it teaches other skills too….like math skills, problem solving, self-control, how to focus as well as patience. (That last one I might have missed. LOL) If you have a young person, ages 7+, we have a great two day session planned. Click here to register.

Barn Quilts

Barn Quilts are beautiful. They have been around for hundreds of years. In the past, farmers used different types of folk-art including quilt-like blocks to decorate their barns. People chose blocks to reflect particular meanings. They have had a resurgence in the last 20 years with many states offering Barn Quilt Trails or Tours. A barn quilt can be hung on the exterior of your barn, house, porch, garage, gate, shed, gazebo, chicken coop or boat shed to be shared with admirers from the road. T-Shirt Rag Quilts

We had the best class this weekend with these three ladies making T-shirt Rag Quilts from their old t-shirts. It is such a great project to repurpose and use those shirts just T-shirt Rag Quilt washed taking up drawer space. Hearing all the stories about the shirts was great fun. This is a terrific project and the quilts are a wonderful addition to your home…soft and cozy…great to snuggle up under and watch a movie. It Makes Me Happy

Did you ever have one of those days (or weeks) where things just didn’t go right….at all? That is what has been going on lately. UGH! And this morning I went to pull out my go-to machine to work on a new pattern for a quilt and forgot that it was still down at The Studio from last weekend’s sewing class. UGH again!!!! But then I thought maybe I will use my little “Nola Mae”, my Featherweight machine. (People with Featherweights name their machines because they become part of the family. Mine is named for Granny, my paternal grandmother. She patiently let a little girl “help” her sew. I learned so much from her so I wanted this one to be named for her.) The minute I threaded her up and made the first few stitches my mood lightened and I smiled. She turned my day around. This little machine makes me so happy! Read more about this little girl here.
