I’ve been busy quilting since September when I watched a Quilt as You Go video. I was hooked. It’s been so much fun. I’ve made several Christmas presents and can’t wait to finish the one I currently have on the machine. Love this process!

Several years ago I found my first Featherweight Sewing machine at an auction…a 1946 beauty. (Read about her here.) And ever since then I have been hoping to find a 1961 Featherweight to go along with her. I’m still looking for that ’61 but I ran across this beauty recently….a one owner 1964 Featherweight! She looks like she just came off the factory line. And since there is a tradition with Featherweights to give them a name I have decided to call this one Lucille for my maternal grandmother. (My first Featherweight is named Nola Mae for my paternal grandmother who taught me to sew.) Have a mentioned that I love these little machines?! They make the BEST stitch as anyone who has ever sewed on one will tell you. I am thrilled the “Lucille” now resides with me and will help me make some beautiful quilts in the future. Now just one more Featherweight to find….that elusive 1961! And I am really hoping to find a tan one so then I will have the trifecta of Featherweights….one in each color! Wish me luck.

The obsession with Quilt As You Go continues. I just completed this quilt with this beautiful Georgia themed fabric that I found at Joann’s Fabrics…..never mind that I am in Virginia. I couldn’t figure out why they have Georgia fabric here. Probably some Joann’s in Georgia got a delivery of Virginia fabric. LOL! But lucky me as I am from Georgia and I love the fabric. Notice in the close up shot the outline of the state with images of scenes around the state….and then there is the brown fabric with Georgia in script as well as the peach and flip flop fabrics. I admit the flip flop fabric was listed as Florida state fabric but anyone who is from Georgia knows that flip flop is practically year round footwear! I like the way the broken diamond sting quilt design turned out. This is a fun, fun, fun way to quilt!

Wow! What fun we had yesterday as we held our first Block of the Month session. We had so much interest in this project that we had to hold two sessions! A Block of the Month series offers a chance for quilters to learn new skills and techniques. It’s typically structured in a way that teaches a new block each month, for a total of 12 blocks. At the end of the year, these blocks can be sewn into a sampler quilt! Each month we will explore a different block pattern getting hands-on instruction for each block. We will be using some traditional block patterns as well as some modern ones. I can’t wait to see these beautiful quilts come together! Great work ladies. See you next month!

Just complete another String Quilt for the upcoming class on Sunday. This one is from a jelly roll so the strips are more uniform than the first one. (See it here.) The classes on Sunday is the first in a series of Block of the Month quilt classes that we are going to be holding at The Studio over the course of this next year. If you are interested in learning to quilt contact kwalker@kellywalkerstudios.com to get on the wait list for class.

When we had the Pumpkin or Christmas Tree Rag Quilt Class last week Wilma wanted to make hers a table runner instead of a quilt so this is what we came up with. It turned out great! It’s a combination of Quilt as You Go and Applique. Great work Wilma. I love it! We will have a different Table Runner class coming up soon that will be perfect for Thanksgiving. Watch for it.
