I love making these String Quilts from just a bunch of leftover scraps. It’s amazing how good they turn out. This one was made from a big pile of left over red, white and blue fabric for the front (left photo) and a pre-cut layer cake for the back (right photo). It almost looks reversible! This is another Quilt as You Go that was done entirely on a domestic machine. This process is so much fun. We will be beginning another Quilt as You Go Block of the Month group at The Studio soon so if you want to get in on this one let Kelly know. The space is limited to six so get your name on the list early.

Wow! What fun we had yesterday as we held our first Block of the Month session. We had so much interest in this project that we had to hold two sessions! A Block of the Month series offers a chance for quilters to learn new skills and techniques. It’s typically structured in a way that teaches a new block each month, for a total of 12 blocks. At the end of the year, these blocks can be sewn into a sampler quilt! Each month we will explore a different block pattern getting hands-on instruction for each block. We will be using some traditional block patterns as well as some modern ones. I can’t wait to see these beautiful quilts come together! Great work ladies. See you next month!

Just complete another String Quilt for the upcoming class on Sunday. This one is from a jelly roll so the strips are more uniform than the first one. (See it here.) The classes on Sunday is the first in a series of Block of the Month quilt classes that we are going to be holding at The Studio over the course of this next year. If you are interested in learning to quilt contact kwalker@kellywalkerstudios.com to get on the wait list for class.

The Studio is introducing a new ongoing workshop. Join us on the 4th Sunday each month for our “Quilt Block of the Month” (BOM) series. This will offer a chance for beginning quilters to learn new skills and techniques and for those who have experience quilting will discover new patterns while enjoying fellowship with like-minded crafters. We will create a new block each month for a total of 12 designs. During the sessions we will also use the “Quilt As You Go” method so that at the end of the year you will have a beautiful sampler quilt! This is a great way to discover new patterns and new methods that you can apply to other projects throughout the year. Be warned though: THIS IS A FUN AND ADDICTING HOBBY!!!! LOL! (Can you tell that we are excited about this project?!)
The first block we will be making is the “String” Block. String quilts originated as a technique created by budget-conscious quilters as a perfect use for leftover scraps of fabric. It is a great way to use quilting scraps but it is also suited to purchasing fabrics that coordinate and cutting them into “strings” or using jelly rolls. We will learn to use the easy sew-and-flip technique with this block.
For this first block you can come and use “scrap” fabric that we have available. That way you can decide if you like quilting before making an investment in fabric. Then if you want to continue to join in the year long Sampler Quilt project you can pick up your own fabric featuring colors and patterns you love. Or if you are sure you are going to LOVE this (and I know you will) you can go ahead and select some fabrics to use for the project that will make a beautiful end result.
First Session Fee: $ 25 includes written instructions as well as in person instruction for the Block of the Month as well as ideas for other projects for the block. (Space is limited for our sewing sessions so register early.) Click here to register.

I started another String Quilt this week. This one I am using a Jelly Roll so that the strips are all the same width rather than the one I did from scrap pieces last week. (See it here.) I am addicted to this process. It is so much fun, easy and very satisfying to see it come together. LOVE IT!!!! You know there will be a class soon at The Studio.

I am not sure whether to thank or curse the day I discovered a YouTube video on Quilt As You Go (QAYG). I wish I could remember where I first saw it but it was probably on Facebook but I had been wanting to do some quilting but I don’t have a long-arm machine and when I had tried in the past to quilt on my “regular” sewing machine it was just too bulky to work well. But then I read about QAYG…..and I am hooked. It is addictive (or maybe it is just my personality that becomes addicted to fun projects). It is so easy and fun and looks great!!!! These photos are the front and back of my first QAYG quilt. It’s a String Quilt made from a box of scraps that I was getting ready to throw out. I’d gone through the box a few times and pulled out larger pieces but these were all very small and had been sitting in a closet for several years and I wanted to clean out the space. So before I tossed the box I thought why not see if there is a project that might work….and I found this String Quilt idea…..and I LOVE IT! As you can imagine, I have LOADS of ideas for other quilts to make. Can’t wait!!!
