The Tree Out Front is an oil on 6″x8″ canvas and is available for $95.  We still have lots of snow and it makes everything look so different that I want to paint all the scenes with snow on them now.  I’ll have to settle for taking photos to build my reference file.

This is the reference photo and how it looks on the easel with the painting.  This photo was taken from my front door looking to the left down the street.

The Snow Storm

The snow storm hit us here Friday night.  It snowed all evening and most of the next day.

By the time it stopped we had about 26 inches around my place.

That’s when the digging out started.  Yikes!

Luckily, Allen has a snow plow and came by and pushed out most of the driveway.  What a big help that was!

But we still had to dig out the Explorer….

And Sandy’s car.  Sandy is my friend and dog sitter.  She was here to work at Delilah’s.  (She’s also and excellent photographer and has her work at the shop.)  Sandy was snowed in with us so we had to try to get her car out since she has to go to another petsitting job at the first of the week.

Look!  There is a driveway under all that snow.  Imagine that!!!

Even Truman and Jed has a little pathway dug out.  We called it the pee pee path.  😉

Stay in and stay warm until the roads are cleared and we’ll post a new painting tomorrow.

From time to time I do commission work other than pet portraits.  One that I recently completed was Susan’s Weeping Cherry Tree.  After living with the painting for several weeks the client decided that she would like to have the house in the painting after all.  So here is a snapshot of the painting after I added the house.

This was the original painting.  I like having the house in it.  It adds depth to the composition.  It’s not always possible to go back into a painting and make it work but sometimes you get lucky.  🙂

Congratulations to Charlee, my art student who did this self-portrait as part of a contest at her school.  They chose one student from each grade and will be putting their portraits on the front cover of their yearbook.  Charlee won!

Great job girl and keep up the good work!

Shenandoah Fall

This is the beginning of the painting, Shenandoah Fall.  I was reminded recently by a couple of blog readers that  you like to see the progress of a painting.  I forget to take photos because I get caught up in what I am doing when I paint.  I’ll try to remember to stop and take some photos so that I can post the progression in the future.

The palette I worked with looked like this.  I often use palette paper which makes for a much easier clean-up when I finish work.  I generally use about 6 or 7 colors when I paint and blend them together to get the tones I need.

And this is the complete painting, Shenandoah Fall I, which measures 6″x8″ and is framed and available at Delilah’s for $145.  There is a companion piece that I did at the same time that I will post soon.

Remembering Rosie

It was a year ago today that Miss Rosie left us.  It’s so hard to believe that it has been a year.

Rosie was the sweetest little Cairn Terrier that we rescued.  She came to us via a wonderful rescue organization called Col. Potter Cairn Rescue.  They do wonderful work with cairns, especially saving them from puppy mills.  And that is where they got Rosie.

She spent the first seven years of her life in a puppy mill, just churning out baby cairns at every opportunity.  No one knows how many puppies she had but we are pretty sure it was a huge number.

Then she was rescued and life really changed.  She went to a foster home where they worked to teach her that “humans” are good and won’t hurt you.  It took her quite a while to grasp this concept.  We got her about three months after her rescue and she was still very scared of people.  But slowly she came around.  It took about a year for her to really trust me and even longer before she trusted Allen.  But once she did, she was the best.

She connected first with Jeffie, who was the basset/lab mix, who was also a rescue.  She loved him and would play with him everyday.  He would chase her and she would chase him.  Here they are with Jeffie tickling her tummy.  🙂

The best part of rescuing a pup like Rosie who has a sad history is that when she learns to play, or chase a toy, or roll over for her belly to be petted, you feel a joy that is so hard to describe.  And as Rosie blossomed, we were all full of joy for her.

Once she learned that life could be good she settled in to be the biggest, little princess you have ever seen.  She relished the good life.  And she was a perfect little girl.

One of the funniest quirks she had was after we would go for a long walk, especially in the hot summer months, she would find the nearest puddle of water and lay down in it.  We even set up a little flat pool for her to cool down her belly when she got home from walks.  It was so funny to watch.

She was always a little heavy, due to all the puppies she had.  We didn’t call it fat, we called her matronly.

And then she got her wheels!  She loved to ride when we went on especially long walks.

This was her “Town Car”.

And this was her “Off Road” vehicle that she kept out at the cabin for rougher terrain.

I still can’t believe that it’s been a year since that sweet little angel was with us.  She was such a good girl and a great rescue story.

I thank you all for indulging me and allowing me to remember Rosie.

We miss you Rosie!
