It was a year ago today that Miss Rosie left us. It’s so hard to believe that it has been a year.
Rosie was the sweetest little Cairn Terrier that we rescued. She came to us via a wonderful rescue organization called Col. Potter Cairn Rescue. They do wonderful work with cairns, especially saving them from puppy mills. And that is where they got Rosie.
She spent the first seven years of her life in a puppy mill, just churning out baby cairns at every opportunity. No one knows how many puppies she had but we are pretty sure it was a huge number.
Then she was rescued and life really changed. She went to a foster home where they worked to teach her that “humans” are good and won’t hurt you. It took her quite a while to grasp this concept. We got her about three months after her rescue and she was still very scared of people. But slowly she came around. It took about a year for her to really trust me and even longer before she trusted Allen. But once she did, she was the best.
She connected first with Jeffie, who was the basset/lab mix, who was also a rescue. She loved him and would play with him everyday. He would chase her and she would chase him. Here they are with Jeffie tickling her tummy. 🙂
The best part of rescuing a pup like Rosie who has a sad history is that when she learns to play, or chase a toy, or roll over for her belly to be petted, you feel a joy that is so hard to describe. And as Rosie blossomed, we were all full of joy for her.
Once she learned that life could be good she settled in to be the biggest, little princess you have ever seen. She relished the good life. And she was a perfect little girl.
One of the funniest quirks she had was after we would go for a long walk, especially in the hot summer months, she would find the nearest puddle of water and lay down in it. We even set up a little flat pool for her to cool down her belly when she got home from walks. It was so funny to watch.
She was always a little heavy, due to all the puppies she had. We didn’t call it fat, we called her matronly.
And then she got her wheels! She loved to ride when we went on especially long walks.
This was her “Town Car”.
And this was her “Off Road” vehicle that she kept out at the cabin for rougher terrain.
I still can’t believe that it’s been a year since that sweet little angel was with us. She was such a good girl and a great rescue story.
I thank you all for indulging me and allowing me to remember Rosie.
We miss you Rosie!
Rosie was a very sweet little girl and I know how much you miss her. As you know I lost my wonderful cairn Crissi in April and I miss her so very much as she was a wonderful part of my life for 14 1/2 years. I will always feel honored to have had her in my life as she enriched it deeply! I loved all the pictures and stories of Rosie. Crissi did the same after her first long walk, she came back and emersed herself as much as she could in her water bowl, very funny!
We miss our little friend Rosie very much. She was a very sweet girl we were honored to know. Besides her keeping my Great Danes in line, she especially loved to touch noses with my kittycat Pumpkin. They were two older girls who knew the value of being ladies.
Goodbye sweet Rosie. You were much loved.
It’s something you don’t get over easily, isn’t it? We lost a long term member of our family in August, but my human still tears up at the thought of his old buddy. (See my post – “Goodbye Mr. B”) Our belated condolences. Visit me at http://www.sandysays1.wordpress.com for some Christmas laughs.
PS Never apologize for remembering and talking about a dear friend like Rosie.
