da Vinci’s Last Supper, 181″x 346″, tempera, 1494-1498

On this day in 1452 Leonardo da Vinci was born.  He is often considered the most diversely talented person who ever lived.  He was a painter, sculptor, writer, architect, musician, engineer, cartographer, inventor, and more.

“His genius, perhaps more than that of any other figure, epitomized the Renaissance humanist ideal. Leonardo has often been described as the archetype of the Renaissance Man, a man of “unquenchable curiosity” and “feverishly inventive imagination”.  (from Wikipedia)

I just completed this commission that was mailed off to Pennsylvania this week.  The person ordering the work had a very specific composition in mind for this pet portrait, as you can see here.  For me, it looks like the dog is photo bombing the landscape scene.  🙂

April's Paint Party

April’s Paint Party

I love sharing photos of paintings done by people who come to the Paint Parties as well as students in my art classes.  Here is the group from April’s 1st Saturday Paint Party.  They did a great job on their flowers!

Several weeks ago I shared a couple of crochet vests that I had made.  Since I was on such a roll I decided to try another one and it started out great.  But about a little over half way through I could tell that the pattern sizing was off.  It was much smaller than I needed but instead of ripping it out I decided to finish it and give it to someone tall and skinny.  LOL

I happen to have a young student in my art class that I thought it would be cute on and asked her if she liked the “retro” look and when she said yes I was glad.  So here’s Hannah wearing “HER” new vest.  Doesn’t she look cute?!  I will have to try it again for myself.

GoatsThe kids painted goats yesterday.  They did FABULOUS paintings.  What fun!!  Kids Class for ages 7-12 is every Wednesday from 4:15-5:15 at The Studio at 105 E Main Street in Front Royal.

Picasso’s Goat

On this day 43 years ago (1973) Pablo Picasso died.  He was a Spanish painter and sculptor who spent the majority of his life in France. (Learn more about him here.)

Recently there have been a variety of news stories involving his granddaughter, Marina Picasso, selling off his art. There are many reasons for selling art – the most obvious is to make money however she seems to be selling to get revenge.  It’s an interesting story.  Take a look here.  It’s fascinating.

Crochet has become very popular again.  Maybe it’s the retro feel of it; maybe it’s because people want a fun hobby they can do that will wind them down at the end of the day.  Who knows?  But there is no denying that crochet is in again.

We have had so many people take crochet classes at The Studio and we are offering even more.  This week (Tuesday) we have a Crochet Flowers class.  Learn to make  beautiful flowers that can be used to embellish hats, blankets, etc.  And then on Sunday we have a Granny Square class where we will learn to make traditional Granny Squares as well as some that are NOT your Grandmother’s Granny Square.  Why don’t you come join us?

2015-04-04 07 56 50_resized 2015-04-04 07 56 12_resizedEvery other Friday I teach art at The Village at Orchard Ridge in Winchester.  This week one of my students called to ask if she could bring her granddaughter who was visiting her to art class.  Of course!

And this little 4-year-old turned out to be a great little student.  She had so much fun painting the two little canvases I brought for her.  And didn’t she do a wonderful job.  She was so excited to show her parents.
