While at the Philadelphia Museum of Art we got to see some beautiful impressionism. Of course, Monet, one of our all time favorites and one of the founders of the impressionist movement was on prominent display. Everyone recognizes the Japanese Footbridge. He painted it many times. PMA has two interesting ones. The first he painted in 1899…he painted it 12 times that year. Some twenty years later he had begun to have trouble with his eyesight and complained of not seeing colors well. You see the difference by comparing these two versions of his Japanese Footbridge. It was very telling to see them in the same museum.

In Philadelphia for a quick art trip with some friends from home as well as a cousin from Georgia. We jumped right in by driving directly to the Philadelphia Museum of Art to see as much as we could before it closed at 5. We got in quite a bit….and quite a variety from the fabulous watercolor exhibit to a huge Chagall.
I’ll be sharing more over the next few days. Today we will go to the Barnes Foundation. It is my favorite so I can’t wait!
80 Years Ago Today!

Eighty years ago today Congress passed an act to accept a gift of an art collection and building funds to create a National Art Museum on the National Mall. Andrew Mellon, a Pittsburgh banker and Secretary of the Treasury (from 1921-32) had the idea and worked on a plan to create the new gallery and it was his donation in 1937 of his substantial art collection valued at $40 million plus an additional $10 million ($10 million in 1937 equals $172 million in 2017) for construction that was used to establish the National Gallery of Art. Congress accepted his offer and passed the act to establish the museum on March 24, 1937, Mellon’s birthday.
The National Gallery of Art brings wonderful works of art to the public (for free admission) that would not ordinarily be on view. An example is the recent purchase of Gerard van Honthorst’s monumental masterwork, The Concert, that was acquired by the National Gallery in 2013 and went on display for the first time in 218 years.
Montpelier-Worth the Trip!

I visited Montpelier yesterday. It was a terrific day trip to learn more about how James and Dolley Madison lived. It was really interesting and very well done. While they didn’t allow photography inside the mansion there was plenty of wonderful things to take pictures of outside.
And of course, while there I had to pay my respects to the author of our Constitution at the family cemetery. Montpelier is near Orange, Virginia and if you are ever in the area it is worth the time. Click here for more info.

We had a guest instructor at The Studio yesterday to teach Gelli Printing. Sandra Charles, a wonderful fiber artist, came in to teach the kids how to get fabulous designs on paper and cloth using Gelli plates.
The kids learned about mono prints and were excited to create such cool designs.

President Bush Paints Veterans

George W. Bush didn’t start painting until after he left the White House when he read Winston Churchill’s Painting as a Pastime. (Here’s a blog post we wrote about that book a few years ago.) He found that he loved painting and jumped in with both feet the way many of us do once we discover painting. He has spent the last year painting portraits of veterans in an attempt to bring attention to wounded veterans and profits from this book will be donated to the Military Service Initiative at the George W. Bush Presidential Center. Great idea! His book is released today. Read and see more about it here.

The Studio is sponsoring a really fun event for the Humane Society of Warren County – PAWCASSO. When Lavenda Denney approached me last year about her idea for this project she knew she had me at art and rescue pets. She wanted to have the available animals at the shelter “paint” works of art to sell at a show at the arts council. I loved the idea and agreed to sponsor it right away but also suggested we take it a little further by offering private lessons for people who already have pets. So The Studio provided 10 sessions to people who would pre-purchase a large (18″ x 24″) painting with their pets. The pets had a private lesson with me and we created the large work of art. And it’s no surprise that those sold out. We have had so much fun with this project. And tonight is the reception from 6-9 pm at The Blue Ridge Arts Council at 405 E Main St. You don’t want to miss it! You have to see this art and these wonderful small works are for sale. Please come. Here are some of the painters at their session. LOL!
9 Years and Going Strong!
Posted in daily painter, Serendipity, tagged 9 years, blogging, Nine Years on February 18, 2017| 4 Comments »
It was nine years ago today that I posted my first entry on “Life of a Daily Painter” blog. It’s hard to believe it’s been that long. NINE YEARS!
I started blogging as a way to share the daily paintings that I was creating and to hopefully sell some as I try to make a living as an artist. But after a year or so the blog developed into more. As I started teaching more I would share the work of my students. They enjoy seeing their work and hearing your comments on what they are doing.
And now that we have The Studio – A Place for Learning (a creative teaching co-op) I am sharing the creativity of others who take all sorts of classes there.
And in the midst of all the posts about art and creating I have shared stories about my dogs (here is one of my favorite about Truman) , some painting tips, museum travel suggestions (here is one that features the “French” Lincoln), recipes, crochet patterns and memories of my family.
Now with Facebook many others have discovered the blog and started following too. Many of you have followed from the beginning and others found me along the way. I am so grateful to you all for that.
Each morning the first thing I do is sit down to write a post and share a photo. It’s become a habit that I enjoy. Thanks for following along. I hope you will continue visiting with me here.

Rumor came out of retirement to win Westminster last night in New York City. We went to the show last year and saw Rumor in person then. Here are some shots of her from last year’s show. Congrats on the comeback Rumor!
