I had a chance to experiment with a couple of new stitches. This is the Butterfly Stitch using Caron Cakes (that I love). The self striping yarn is so much fun and so easy to work with because you don’t have to change yarn over and over again to get a beautiful look. It does the work for you! Don’t you LOVE it?!

I’ve been working with my friend Deb to set up her Square Store so that soon you will be able to purchase her amazing yarns for your knitting and crochet. Deborah Ray hand spins her own fibers and wools and also hand dyes. The results are amazing!!! Please watch for her store coming soon and you will be able to have some of this beautiful yarn. Love it!

One of the things I like best about crochet is that you can make just about anything with yarn. I’ve made blankets and vests and slippers and dog sweaters and on and on. I like making these soft baskets that can hold all kinds of things including more yarn! You can never have enough yarn in your stash! LOL!
Crocheting First Ladies

Yesterday the Interweave blog had an interesting post for President’s Day all about First Ladies who crocheted. I was so interested to read about Ida Saxton McKinley who crocheted over 4000 slippers while her husband was in office despite her ill health. The photos today are from a wonderful article on Betsy Butler’s blog. (See it here.) This is from Interweave:
- “Ida Saxton McKinley (1847-1907), the wife of President William McKinley (1843-1901), was limited by precarious health. Suffering from severe headaches, mild epileptic seizures, fainting spells, and periods of depression, she often preferred to remain in her private quarters. But despite her physical limitations, she was an avid crocheter said to have crocheted some 4,000 pairs of bedroom slippers during her lifetime . . . Mrs. McKinley either gave these slippers away to friends, veterans, and orphans or she sold them at auction to raise money for the charities that she supported.”

I made a new ruffled scarf last night from a beautiful skein of yarn that my friend Sandra gave me yesterday. I love it. It was easy to work up but looks difficult. It’s not. Really nice. There are several good tutorials online if you look for them using the Sashay name. Thanks Sandra for thinking of me.

Just got through making this crocheted vest simplifying a pattern so that we can offer this as a class for beginners at The Studio. It turned out great and can be done in any yarn and for any size. And the best part is that it’s very simple. Let’s give it a try!

I’m working on my scarf for the upcoming ConGT in Tennessee on March 17-19. I am going back over to hold a few Paint Parties. We’ll be painting the Exploding Tardis and either a Tardis or Dalek. (Click the links to see them and register.) But in the meantime I’ll keep working on my scarf. (You can see Lincoln in the window. He is a little bored with how long it’s taking. LOL)
Week 2 of Temperature Scarf

I am catching up my Temperature Scarf. I completed week 2. Remember I thought I might try using different stitches each week. Well for the second week I chose a shell stitch. Since I am just trying to make it work I am having to just determine how many stitches to skip to make it fit. For this one I skipped 2 stitches and then did 5 double crochets and skipped 2 stitches and then did a single crochet. Then I repeated. Read more about the Temperature Scarf here.
