Did You Know This About Van Gogh?

The movie, Loving Vincent, that we saw on Monday at The Avalon reminded me of some things about Vincent Van Gogh. Here are some of his famous paintings that the movie brought to life along with some interesting facts:

Did you know that Van Gogh didn’t start painting until he was 27 years old? Maybe that gives hope to all of us late bloomers out there.
Did you know that he produced his most famous painting while in an asylum in Saint-Remy-de-Provence, France. He painted Starry Night while in this mental hospital. (You can paint Starry Night with us on Friday. Click here to register.)
In just the ten years that he painted he produced about 900 oil paintings….some the most famous paintings in the world today.
Some say none but other references say he sold just one painting in his lifetime. It was called “The Red Vineyard”.
His brother, Theo, supported him in his art providing supplies and encouragement was with Vincent when he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. (Some sources say that he was shot by a village boy.) Theo reported that Vincent’s last words were “the sadness will last forever.”

It’s hard to believe such a tortured soul produced so many beautiful works of art. He painted flowers and landscapes like no other and mainly because he was so poor he couldn’t afford to pay models to sit for him. We’re lucky he chose to paint.

Starry Night Famous Painters

Van Gogh’s Starry Night at Camp

20170727_121249-1 The young artists were so excited to paint Van Gogh’s Starry Night at Art Camp yesterday. It was our final day of camp for this age group (ages 8-13) for this summer. We had an amazing group of painters who created some beautiful pieces of art while learning about a variety of famous artists. There is one more session left for the younger artists (ages 5-7) coming up on August 3-4. Here is the registration information.

Amazing Van Gogh Recovery

Amazingly two Van Gogh paintings that have been missing since 2002 have been recovered. They are valued at $30 million. I’m sure the Van Gogh Museum never thought they would be found. Van Gogh’s Flowers

Camp 5 Day 4 Van Gogh 1 We wrapped up this session of Art Camp with a lovely, large painting of Van Gogh’s “Vase with Carnation and other Flowers”, originally painted in 1886. This is one you don’t see very often but it’s lovely and the kids did an outstanding job on this one.

Van Gogh’s Wheatfield at Art Camp

Camp 5 Day 1 Van Gogh Wheatfield We paint Van Gogh’s Wheatfield with Crows yesterday at Art Camp. It is thought to be one of his last paintings. The kids did an excellent job on it as they learned about Post-impressionism and Van Gogh’s short, choppy strokes. Great work everyone! Art Camp continues today…..with Warhol!
