Each year there is a big Trade Show & Workshop held in Raleigh NC called Art of the Carolinas.  I’ve attended several times but haven’t been able to make it in a few years…until now.  I came this year with two friends and we are enjoying the workshops.  Yesterday I went to Kimberlee Maselli‘s Expressive Floral with Palette Knife class.  She’s a great instructor helping each of us to learn to use a variety of knives to get shapes and designs to make a lovely floral painting.

We first worked on paper with a few different shapes and then she turned us loose on a canvas panel.  She had fresh flowers available for inspiration.  I chose the tulips.  It was a fun and different way for me to work.  Can’t wait till the next workshop.  More from Raleigh tomorrow.

Yesterday we had a private party.  It was a special one as Ty was visiting from Brooklyn with his “Virginia mom”, Kimberly.  And their friend Josh joined in at the party too.

Ty is Kim’s “Fresh Air Fund” son.   I learned from their website that “since 1877, The Fresh Air Fund, a not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences in the country to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities. At Fresh Air camps in Fishkill, NY, and with volunteer host families along the East Coast and Southern Canada, Fresh Air kids learn new skills, discover talents, build confidence, make friends and have fun. During the school year, The Fresh Air Fund continues to support students through tutoring, mentoring and leadership programs.”

What a terrific program!  And what a terrific thing that Kimberly is doing with these kids.  Ty was delightful and told me about all the many things they have been doing since he’s been visiting in Virginia.

Then our regular Wednesday Kid’s Class came in followed by the evening Adult Art Class.  Whew!!!!!!   A long day but a lot of happy artists.  🙂

Palette Knife paintingknife paint

Palette knife painting produces beautifully textured works of art.  You can work in a totally abstract way as well as produce recognizable subjects.  Plus it can be lots of fun.  You can do it.  Why not give  it a try.

Last Wednesday the kids tried their hand at palette knife painting.  It was fun and they all did a great job.  It’s exciting to experiment with something new and different.  I decided to complete the demo painting I did with the kids so that we can offer an adult version of the palette knife class.  A paint party coming soon….
