We had such a great time on our trip to Lancaster, Pennsylvania. We went to see the Ricky Scaggs concert but we packed in a whole lot more. We drove around the countryside and took in the beautiful landscape; saw hardworking people and their horses working the fields; watch the horse and buggies come into town; shopped in some lovely old towns with painted buildings that we adored; but best of all we found a few fabric outlets where I could not resist buying some gorgeous material. I’m beginning to think I have a problem. LOL! I see another trip to the area in the very near future.

Yesterday we continued Art Camp and studied Edgar Degas “The Jockey”. The kids did a terrific job on this difficult painting.
Then in the afternoon we had our regular weekly kids art class where we painted ice cream cones. It made us all hungry! Great work everyone….

This past week in art class and then again on Saturday at the Wine Festival downtown I worked on this painting. This is Patriot and Zip, two beautiful rescue horses adopted by my friend Suzanne McMinn and her daughter, Morgan. (Patriot and Zip, oil on canvas panel, 11″x14″, available by contacting kwalker@kellywalkerstudios.com)
I will be meeting these lovely guys in June when I go to Sassafras Farm, their home and home to Chickens in the Road, where I will be painting a mural for Suzanne. And while I am there Suzanne is having a fundraiser for Heart of Phoenix Equine Rescue from where she rescued Zip and Patriot. Read about all of that here.
Next I’ll be making prints of this painting and anyone who donates at least $25 to Heart of Phoenix Equine Rescue before the fundraiser in June at Sassafras Farm will receive a print suitable for framing. Take a look at Heart of Phoenix here and see the good work they do.

Degas’s Horses is an acrylic measuring 11″x14″. It is available at the Blue Ridge Arts Council. This demonstration piece is one that I did this summer at Art Camp during famous painters week. One way that artists over the ages have learned to paint is by copying the masters. I simplified Degas’s painting so the kids could paint it.
