The view we painted

Painting in Plein Air is my favorite way to paint and I don’t get to do it as often as I would like.  Last Saturday we had a Plein Air workshop at Dickey RIdge Visitor Center in the Shenandoah National Park.  It was a wonderful morning….cool in the morning but then the sun peaked out and the view was fabulous.

The term “plein air” was used to describe Claude Monet and the Impressionists in France.  In French it means “open air” or “outside,” but since Monet’s time the term has been used to describe people who take their easels outdoors to paint.  Plein air painting is for people who love to be outdoors in nature, people who love to paint landscapes (as well as other outdoor subjects like buildings, old barns, flowers, gardens, etc).

The colors and detail you can see while painting outdoors is so much more vivid than you see when painting from photos.  And where we live there are so many lovely scenes to paint…the mountains, the valley, the Shenandoah and so much more.  (Click here and here to see other plein air painting session.)

We will hold another Plein Air workshop this fall so if you have ever wanted to give it a try start planning now to join us.

Jed is not so sure about the Princess

Last week I let my friend Sandra get me into another project.  LOL (You might remember Sandra as the one with whom I sewed the cussing jacket.  See it here.)

Now we have made Garden Princesses.  Sandra’s book called them scarecrows but I didn’t think they were scary at all.

I love how they turned out.  They are cut out of plywood and painted with acrylics and embellished with tin.  They are treated for outdoor use.

Thanks Sandra for getting me into this one.  I love my princess and she is working in the garden right now.  Can’t wait for our next project!

Doorman 1Doorman 2Last week I needed a little something new and fun to hang on the door at The Studio.  So I had a photo of a yard art tin can man that I had been wanting to make for my garden but decided he would look cool on the door too.

So here he is…my new doorman.    I just used a heavy gauge wire to string him together and adjust his limbs to look right.  If he were in the yard I would plant something in his head can but since he’s on the door I stuck silk flowers there.  Someone suggested that I put paint brushes in the head can.  Great idea.  That will be next!

Last year I went to Florida to teach a Paint Party (read about that here) and met Canary.  Canary was found covered in yellow paint, thus the name Canary.  This lucky cat fell into the lap of luxury!  I started the painting right after I returned from Florida but just got around to wrapping it up.

Kids paint Bird's Nests

Kids paint Bird’s Nests

In the Kid’s Painting class this past Wednesday we painted Bird Nests.  Nice job girls!

Pat Jean 2I mentioned this past week that the Wednesday classes of students really produced this week.  Seems like they all finished their paintings at the same time.  Here are Pat and Jean from the Wednesday Night Class with their paintings.  They turned out super!  Great job girls.  And to see the Wednesday morning painters work click here.

Robin's Eggs in Bird Nest

Robin’s Eggs in Bird Nest

Today we are introducing a new feature – eBay auction for some original paintings.  From time to time we will list art on eBay and it starts with today’s painting of this little Robin’s Egg Bird Nest.  It’s an acrylic on 6″x6″ gallery wrap canvas.  If we get this right you can click on this link or on the photo and go to eBay to bid (or buy) this original work of art. (UPDATE on June 6:  This painting SOLD on eBay.  Thanks!)

And thanks for looking!

I teach three adult painting classes each week… Wednesday at 10:30 am or 5:30 pm and Thursday at 5:30.  Each student paints whatever subject matter interests them and I help them individually.  That way they get to paint something that they want not just what I choose for them.  It also allows each person to develop their own style.

I love seeing what each students chooses.  Yesterday both of the Wednesday classes had several people who completed paintings.  Here are four of the Wednesday mornings painters with their finished work.  Great job everyone!!!

GreenhouseHere is a little painting that I did last week.  The Greenhouse is an acrylic on canvas measuring 8″x10″.

I enjoyed a lovely morning at Dickey Ridge Visitor Center painting that view.  I have painted it several times but it’s always a thrill to be there painting outdoors.
