I can’t believe all the interest in my “Hot Tub Garden”. The question I got the most was about what I planted so here is the layout and the plants. I will keep posting photos as it grows to show the progress.

A Raised Garden

I haven’t planted a garden in years. I think the last time I tried I ran into two problems: 1) red clay in my yard, and 2) a basset hound that like to dig. But this year I decided to try again but this time I planted a raised garden.

For years I enjoyed a hot tub on my deck but over the last three or four years I never used it. I tried many times to give it away to someone who would enjoy it but no takers and since it is soooo BIG and difficult to move I have “repurposed” it into my raised garden bed.

First Allen drilled a couple of holes in the bottom for drainage. Then I layered gravel. Next some fill dirt, followed by garden soil. Then my plants. Since I have never tried gardening in a small space I am not sure what to expect. I planted several tomatoes, yellow squash and zucchini and several sweet peppers along with basil. In the middle where it will be harder to reach I threw in some zinnia seeds.

Can’t wait now to see what happens.

Pretty Peony

My FAVORITE flower is peonies. I love how they look but I hate how we only get them about two weeks a year. During the time they are blooming Allen brings me some almost everyday. He has some beautiful growing at his place.

Yesterday I decided to try paint one every day while they are blooming. Here is the first one.

A few weeks ago I posted about taking photos of the wonderful flowers we are seeing now both in nature and arrangements we have during this time of the year. (Read that here.) I got back to painting some of those recently. I will have to wrap this one up soon as it is about 80% complete.

There is so much subject matter to paint at this time of the year. Thank goodness we have a camera at hand at all times!

Banana Nut Bread for Breakfast

Kelly’s Banana Nut Bread

Sunday morning I made Banana Nut Bread for breakfast. I often buy bananas and don’t eat them until they get soft and I don’t like them like that so I end up making bread. I mentioned in previous posts that I grew up in a pecan orchard (read that and get those recipes here and here) so we had LOTS of pecans to cook and bake with so I love them and still cook with them even though I don’t have the wonderful endless supply that I once did. Here’s the recipe that I use for Banana Nut Bread. I like it because its moist but not too sweet. Enjoy!

Banana Nut Bread

2 cups self-rising flour

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

2 eggs, beaten

1 ½ cups mashed ripe bananas (about 5 medium or 2 large)

1 cup sugar

½ cup cooking oil OR melted butter

1 cup chopped pecans

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Combine dry ingredients (except pecans) and then mix in eggs, banana and oil or butter. Mix well. Fold in pecans last. Pour into a greased and floured loaf pan and bake for about 55 minutes for a large loaf pan or 40-45 minutes for a small loaf pan. Cool for 10 minutes and then remove from pan. A slice is perfect with a little butter!

We had a fun group painting their pet’s portraits yesterday. I especially love it when people are painting portraits of pets they have lost and they tell wonderful stories about them. Great job ladies. These are special.

Often when an artist works she paints alone. If you are a full-time artist you look for opportunities to paint in public where people can see your work and you working and hopefully connect to it and remember you when they want to purchase original art. Last night was just such an opportunity at Taste of the Town.

I had a wonderful time painting and visiting with people as they stopped by to say hello.

I was right by the Gazebo so I got to enjoy wonderful music while I worked. The night was terrific and loads of fun. If you missed it you will have to plan to come to the one in the Fall.
