While at the Philadelphia Museum of Art we got to see some beautiful impressionism. Of course, Monet, one of our all time favorites and one of the founders of the impressionist movement was on prominent display. Everyone recognizes the Japanese Footbridge. He painted it many times. PMA has two interesting ones. The first he painted in 1899…he painted it 12 times that year. Some twenty years later he had begun to have trouble with his eyesight and complained of not seeing colors well. You see the difference by comparing these two versions of his Japanese Footbridge. It was very telling to see them in the same museum.
In Philadelphia for a quick art trip with some friends from home as well as a cousin from Georgia. We jumped right in by driving directly to the Philadelphia Museum of Art to see as much as we could before it closed at 5. We got in quite a bit….and quite a variety from the fabulous watercolor exhibit to a huge Chagall.
I’ll be sharing more over the next few days. Today we will go to the Barnes Foundation. It is my favorite so I can’t wait!

The Paint Party at Rappahannock Cellars was a huge success last night. With 65 painters it is the largest paint party we have ever held. Everyone was enthusiastic and energized by their terrific paintings….and fabulous wine. It was a great combination. Thank goodness for Lauren and Michele, two of my art students, who helped me work the party. Here are some scenes from the evening. (And thanks Lauren for the panoramic shot.) We can’t wait for the next one on May 12th!

Often called the last of the old Masters painters and the first of the modern painters, Francisco de Goya was born on March 30, 1746 in Spain. In 1789 he was appointed court painter to Charles IV and created many portraits. His work took a dark but interesting turn over the years as he became very ill and lost his hearing….some say because of lead poisoning from the paints he used. His work became dark and strange. Take a look here to learn more about Goya and his works.

We had a terrific Bachelorette Party at The Studio last night. The girls came from New Jersey, Pennsylvania and other parts of Virginia to celebrate the upcoming nuptials. And since the wedding will be outdoors with the mountains as a backdrop and the wedding party carrying wildflowers that is what we created.
