Going with my artist friends and students from The Southerlands to the National Gallery of Art today to see the Picasso drawings.  Take a look at more here.    Since it’s opening in 1941, the National Gallery of Art has been a treasury of art and culture for the American people.  Started with paintings donated by Andrew Mellon then followed by other collectors donations the NGA collection offers something for everyone.

You can see one of those great collections, The Chester Dale Collection here and more here.  Tomorrow I hope to have photos of our adventure.

Dogs Gone Wild!

I write a lot about Lincoln because he is usually misbehaving so I have more stories about his antics so I wanted to lead with Jed in this post.  He’s a handsome guy and so good.  He had fun at the cabin last weekend running and stretching and rolling in the grass.

Max came to visit so he chased Lincoln and gave him some really good exercise.

Max loves Lincoln and follows him everywhere.  They are so cute playing.

It worried me when Max chased him around the pond because Lincoln can’t swim….legs too short to hold up that long body.

Max wore himself out running and playing but he couldn’t give it up.  He would fall asleep with the ball still in his mouth.  So funny!

And this is what my boys looked like after Max and his mom left to go home.  Two tired pups!

An interesting part of being a painter is the collection of reference photos that you accumulate.  We take pictures everywhere we go of just about everything you can imagine.  You never know when you will need it for painting.

I went to Monticello yesterday and took many lovely shots that someday may turn into paintings or parts of paintings.

Spring is in the air?

The azaleas are confused about the time of the year here in Hilton Head.  They must think it’s April already because the weather sure seems that way.  A nice mid-60’s yesterday allowed me to bike around and take some photos.

I love riding the bike around and taking reference photos for paintings.  Not that I don’t already have tons of them, but you never know what you might get that you just have to put on canvas.

I am going to have to get my photo editing program loaded on this computer though so I can make these a little easier to see.  It was late in the afternoon with not much light….but still some really nice sights!

Public Art

What I love about just driving around on a little vacation instead of making lots of plans to be in a certain place at a certain time is that you run upon some interesting things.

This happened to us in Meadville, PA.  We drove by a fence at their Department of Transportation facility and found the most wonderful public art.  All of these are made of road signs.  How cool is that?!

Fallingwater

I’ve just returned from a “drive-about” with Carol.  We drove over 900 miles around the state of Pennsylvania seeing Lancaster and Erie and Pittsburg and everything in between.  What a lovely state?!  Took lots of photos for painting but one of the most amazing things we saw was Fallingwater, Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterpiece.

It is simply amazing.  A must see!

A month or so ago I went down to Sylva, NC to visit with an aunt and cousin that I hadn’t seen in about 25 years.  It was great seeing them.  And it was good to see the differences in their mountains and ours.  Here are two quick 5×7 paintings that I did when I got home.    And stay tuned, the big annual sale starts soon.

Several years ago I heard a story on NPR about a lady who lived on a little farm in West Virginia and blogged about her life there.  At the time I was at my cabin out in the middle of nowhere with no computer service but as soon as I got back to town I checked it out online and have been following the adventures of Suzanne McMinn and www.chickensintheroad.com ever since.

Almost every day since I heard of her I have allowed her to begin my day with a cute story about her animals, her cheesemaking or some adventure she had gotten herself into.  I love it.

Never did I think that I would actually end up visiting Stringtown Rising Farm and see the organized chaos for myself.  But here I am, taking my own photos of Mr. Hyde.  And isn’t he a handsome fellow?

But the biggest problem so far is that I fallen in love with the two baby goats.  Have you ever seen anything so cute???  They are sold already or I am afraid that I would have had to have taken one home with me.  I’m not sure what Lincoln and Jed would have thought about it but I’m sure we could have figured something out.

The first thing we did when we got here was to make mozzarella cheese!  I love cheese and she is teaching me to make it.  We put our fresh mozzarella on the pizza Suzanne made for us with fresh made crust, herbs and tomatoes right out of the garden.  It was terrific!

And I even think the animals were thrilled that she made fresh pizza because as Suzanne picked the tomatoes for our dinner, she tossed a few over the fence for them!

Tomorrow I start painting the wall downstairs so I’ll try to take photos to show our progress.

In July I spent a day at the National Gallery of Art enjoying the Chester Dale Exhibit.  If you haven’t seen it, you must go.  And as promised I am sharing with you some of the paintings that I saw there.  I chose these three today because I re-watched an amazing film yesterday that involves these two painters.  It’s called Modigliani.  Andy Garcia plays the painter and does an excellent job.

Painter Amedeo Modigliani is famous for his portraits with the singularly recognizable elongated faces. And one of his greatest rivals is Picasso.

Here are two of the Modigliani’s and a Picasso from the Chester Dale exhibit for you to enjoy.

Last weekend at the Plein Air Festival in Easton, Maryland, we met a ten-year old plein air painter who competed with the adults in the Paint-out.  WOW!

I know adults who are scared to paint outdoors, much less in front of thousands of people.  His name is Will Ridenhour and he loves art.  You could tell just by talking with him a few minutes .  And kudos to his parents who were there encouraging him.

Linda and I couldn’t resist the painting so we purchased it and hope to use it in some way to raise money for our dog park.

Will was excited when we told him we wanted to buy his painting.  It was great fun for all of us.  Keep painting Will!!!
