Today would have been Big Mama’s birthday.  She was born in 1908 and lived through some really interesting times.  She taught me so much – cooking, sewing, crocheting and how to work hard.  She loved her family, her community and her church and her friends.  She was a beautiful person and I miss her.

Inspiration is everywhere for artists even in our own backyard….at least that is how I feel. (These photos I took a few days ago as inspiration for a new painting.)  I don’t often write about the “how” of operating an art business in a small town.  It’s a challenge…and I love it….but it’s not easy.  When people tell me that I have a fun job and they wish they could work doing something fun all the time like I do I just smile and agree.  Because it is fun. But it’s a lot like making sausage….you don’t want to see what actually goes in to it.  There is so much behind the scenes to get an image that I think people might enjoy painting at a party….so much that no one ever sees.  First I go through tons of photos trying to find something that will appeal to a large number; then I have to paint it; then I usually paint it again to simplify it so that it will look good but be easy enough for beginners to paint it in a 2-3 hour paint party time; next is the promotion, the registration, the ordering of supplies, etc., etc., etc.   I only say all of this to make people aware that when you choose to attend a paint party with an artist that steals another artist’s image that you are hurting someone…the artist that created the work.  You might ask, well how do I know if its original?  Ask!  Find out if the artist leading the party has a business license.  Are they a legitimate business or just a cash business not paying taxes or licensed?  I think most people don’t want to support people who are stealing from others and probably have never even considered any of this….they just see an offering for a paint party and think, that looks like fun and I’d like to paint it.  I’m writing about this today because one of my paintings was being offered at a Paint Party without my permission.  I only knew about it because I saw it on Facebook.  When I contacted the owner of the business offering it she immediately took the image down and contacted the artist she’d hired to do the party to correct the situation.  I appreciate that.  But even more I would appreciate people offering these parties to be inspired by their surroundings or developing images of their own.  The internet has been a wonderful thing for artists to share and sell their work but it’s also made lazy artists lazier because they don’t have to work at it.  They can just lift something to use.  Don’t be lazy….CREATE!  (OK…rant over….thanks for listening!)

It’s a very sad day as yesterday I learned that a long time art student and friend, Jean Barbour, passed away this week.  Jean painted with us for many years often creating paintings for her family members.  She enjoyed painting….she enjoyed learning.  It was always fun painting with her because she was always happy and eager to paint.  I loved hearing her stories about her family (she was especially proud of her grandchildren) and her travels.  She often painted from photos from trips she had taken.  We have her beloved Charles in our prayers as well as her entire family.  Jean will be greatly missed.  (You can read Jean’s obituary here.)

Congratulations to Front Royal – named 2016 Top Mid-Size Adventure Town by Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine.  WooHoo!   Since we are located at the entrance to Shenandoah National Park and situated where the two forks of the Shenandoah River come together there is so much for people to do here outdoors.  There is more in a nice article about the winners that you can read here.  Franklin, NC was named the small town along with Roanoke, VA as the large town.  Well done Front Royal!

Last night I spent some time at the Clarke County Ruritan Fairgrounds helping judge the Heritage Festival Gourd competition.  If you have some time on your hands this weekend and like heritage arts the Clarke County Fairgrounds is the place to be.  There are LOTS of gourds for sale….large ones to make birdhouses, small ones to make decorative items….as well as other beautiful arts that are becoming lost in our technological world.

The festival, sponsored by the Virginia Lovers’ Gourd Society, is today, Saturday from 9-5 and Sunday from 9-4.  (Admission is a non-perishable food item for the local food bank.)

There were some beautiful entries in the contest and this year the group has become a nationally sanctioned competition.  It is worth the ride over to see this weekend.

This is the final photos from the fundraiser for The Blue Ridge Wildlife Center.  (I promise.)

I don’t know why I got so many photos of Apple Blossom, the opossum but I did.  Maybe because she was very cute…or maybe because she was so photogenic.  Anyway, here she is in all her glory.

I attended one  of the most interesting events last night at Oxbow Farm in Warren County.  It was a fundraising event for The Blue Ridge Wildlife Center.  It was fascinating to see some of the animals that they have had come to their center and that have been rehabilitated that now serve as educational ambassadors.  These animals, for some reason or other, cannot be released back into the wild so they live at the center and help educate the public about the purpose of the center.

There was Snow, the Arctic Fox, that was rescued from a house in Prince William County.  And Apple Blossom, the opossum, whose mother was killed by a car with the babies still attached to her.  Such sad stories…  But BRWC is doing wonderful work to rehabilitate these animals and get them back to their  natural habitat.

A Rapture Owl was released.  It was a beautiful animal but definitely wild…not like the other animals we met that are being used for education.  This one was found on a construction site and fit into the palm of the hand of the woman who rescued and helped rehab it.  And last night she released it.  You can shttps://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fkellywalkerstudios%2Fvideos%2F10207384416743745%2F&show_text=0&width=400“>ee a video here

A few weeks ago at a private Paint Party I saw my friend, Kathleen, that I haven’t seen in several years and as we talked about “what have you been up to” she shared with me that she had been doing more quilting with a group of friends.  Then she showed me this lovely quilt that they made.  The quilt is AMAZING.  But even more amazing than that is the fact that each quilter was given one section (a block) to create and all they were told was to do it in Fall colors.  Can you believe how spectacular it  turned out.  I can’t even imagine that they didn’t shop together for fabric or coordinate to make it this wonderful.  Great work ladies.  This is certainly a piece of art!!!  And thanks Kathleen for sharing this information with me so I could share it with everyone.
