Yesterday at the Capon Springs Artists Retreat we created Paper Paintings.  And it was thrilling that so many came to give it a try….26 paper painters to be exact!  Terrific!!!  What fun we had creating wonderful animals, flowers and scenes using only torn and cut paper.

Then last night everyone displayed the work they have done since Sunday and we had live music for our “Art Show”.

It was terrific.  If you didn’t come to the Artists Retreat you should KICK YOURSELF!  It is so much fun.  The good news is we have dates for the one in the spring….May 20-24, 2018.  Mark your calendar NOW!

Deb Spins 31We are still at Capon Springs teaching at the Artist Retreat.  But last night we had a special treat.  My good friend, Deborah Ray who is assisting me at the Retreat gave us an explanation and demonstration on spinning wool into yarn.

It was fascinating.  It helped us all understand the amount of labor that goes into making this beautiful yarn.  It’s worth every penny they ask for it! Thanks Deb.

We arrived yesterday afternoon at Capon Springs Resort and Farm for an artist Retreat that will run through Thursday.  Last night we had a Paint Party that was open to everyone…even if you had never painted before.  And I think we may have some converts!

I love it when people paint for the first time and find that they can really do it!  What fun…and we had some really nice paintings come out of this group.  Today we are setting up for our first session which is and Introduction to Painting.  While we have some people coming to the Retreat that have painted for years, we have many who are new to art.  There will be something for everyone.

And look…I’m the “Artist in Residence”.  Cool, huh??!!    It’s not too late.  If you are close enough and are interested you can join us.  Just contact Capon Springs for room availability.  It’s just $99 per night and includes 3 meals and all art instruction.  Bring your own supplies or use ours for a small supply fee.  You won’t regret it.  This place is AWESOME!  Did I mention the spa and mineral springs??!!

One of the best places to get some colorful and interesting reference photos is at Farmer’s Markets.  Sunday I rode over to Little Washington with my friend Sandra.  We wanted to check out their market and even though it was drizzling rain we found some nice things (bread, baskets, and tea) as well as got a few nice shots for future paintings.

My friend Deborah and I took her mom out to the Garden Show at Blandy Experimental Farm yesterday for the Garden Show after a little brunch.  It was a fun time.  So many beautiful plants were available.  But there was also other garden related items …. and animals.  We saw these great guys…not sure if they are llamas or alpacas……but they were CUTE!  And while I didn’t buy a basket I did get a hat…and it’s cute too.  I didn’t ask how much the baby was that was on display with the baskets because I really didn’t need one.  LOL!

I visited Montpelier yesterday.  It was a terrific day trip to learn more about how James and Dolley Madison lived.  It was really interesting and very well done.  While they didn’t allow photography inside the mansion there was plenty of wonderful things to take pictures of outside.

And of course, while there I had to pay my respects to the author of our Constitution at the family cemetery.   Montpelier is near Orange, Virginia and if you are ever in the area it is worth the time.  Click here for more info.

We had a guest instructor at The Studio yesterday to teach Gelli Printing.  Sandra Charles, a wonderful fiber artist, came in to teach the kids how to get fabulous designs on paper and cloth using Gelli plates.

The kids learned about mono prints and were excited to create such cool designs.

The Studio is sponsoring a really fun event for the Humane Society of Warren County – PAWCASSO.  When Lavenda Denney approached me last year about her idea for this project she knew she had me at art and rescue pets.  She wanted to have the available animals at the shelter “paint” works of art to sell at a show at the arts council.  I loved the idea and agreed to sponsor it right away but also suggested we take it a little further by offering private lessons for people who already have pets.  So The Studio provided 10 sessions to people who would pre-purchase a large (18″ x 24″) painting with their pets. The pets had a private lesson with me and we created the large work of art.  And it’s no surprise that those sold out.  We have had so much fun with this project.  And tonight is the reception from 6-9 pm at The Blue Ridge Arts Council at 405 E Main St.  You don’t want to miss it! You have to see this art and these wonderful small works are for sale.  Please come.  Here are some of the painters at their session.  LOL!
