Congratulations to Front Royal – named 2016 Top Mid-Size Adventure Town by Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine. WooHoo! Since we are located at the entrance to Shenandoah National Park and situated where the two forks of the Shenandoah River come together there is so much for people to do here outdoors. There is more in a nice article about the winners that you can read here. Franklin, NC was named the small town along with Roanoke, VA as the large town. Well done Front Royal!

Heritage Festival of Gourds & Arts
Posted in daily painter, Serendipity, Small Town Life, tagged Gourd, Gourd Festival on October 29, 2016| 2 Comments »
Last night I spent some time at the Clarke County Ruritan Fairgrounds helping judge the Heritage Festival Gourd competition. If you have some time on your hands this weekend and like heritage arts the Clarke County Fairgrounds is the place to be. There are LOTS of gourds for sale….large ones to make birdhouses, small ones to make decorative items….as well as other beautiful arts that are becoming lost in our technological world.
The festival, sponsored by the Virginia Lovers’ Gourd Society, is today, Saturday from 9-5 and Sunday from 9-4. (Admission is a non-perishable food item for the local food bank.)
There were some beautiful entries in the contest and this year the group has become a nationally sanctioned competition. It is worth the ride over to see this weekend.
The Singer Spartan

Look at my new toy! Thanks Sandra for telling me about this little jewel and for riding out with me to pick it up yesterday. Did I need another sewing machine….well, probably not as I have four plus two embroidery machines…but really, can you ever have enough of these old Singers if they are operational? And this one is but she’s going over to an expert machine maintainer to get a little cleaning and tune up.
I did some research on her last night and think I’ve learned that it’s a 1950’s model that is about 3/4 of the size of the average machine at that time. My only confusion on this one is that it says “Made in Great Britain” on the top of the machine but the serial plate says “Made in Canada”. What??? Got to learn more about that. I wonder if the plate has been replace?? We’ll see what the expert says. Anyway, it will come in real handy for the upcoming sewing classes that we have scheduled at The Studio. Check out the quilt class here and the Simple Poncho class here.

My desk – where I write my blog every morning surrounded by art
I just ran across this article a few days ago and had to share it. You know I loved this!!!
For years I have been saying that everyone should have ORIGINAL art in their home…not just prints or posters. This article gives you “13 Reasons Why Art in the Home is as Important as a Bed”! Well, yes!!!! And, of course, I think #8 is the BEST reason. 🙂
And here are a couple of past posts where I share how I live with art. Click here and here. I’m sharing a few photos here that I just shot two minutes ago in my house. This is how I live with art. As you can imagine it’s everywhere…both mine…and other artists that I admire. If you love art and want a lovely home then buy original art. It’s not as expensive as you think.

Amazingly two Van Gogh paintings that have been missing since 2002 have been recovered. They are valued at $30 million. I’m sure the Van Gogh Museum never thought they would be found. Read about it here. And you can see the press release that the Van Gogh Museum released here. Always good news to have beautiful art by amazing painters recovered.
Happy Birthday Caravaggio

Caravaggio was an Italian painter in Rome, Naples, and Sicily in the late 1500’s and early 1600’s. His work used dramatic lighting as well as the observation of the human state and helped to form the Baroque painting movement. He was born on this day in 1571 (some accounts say his birthday is tomorrow). Read more about him here.

This is the final photos from the fundraiser for The Blue Ridge Wildlife Center. (I promise.)
I don’t know why I got so many photos of Apple Blossom, the opossum but I did. Maybe because she was very cute…or maybe because she was so photogenic. Anyway, here she is in all her glory.

Rapture Release

View from Oxbow Farm
I attended one of the most interesting events last night at Oxbow Farm in Warren County. It was a fundraising event for The Blue Ridge Wildlife Center. It was fascinating to see some of the animals that they have had come to their center and that have been rehabilitated that now serve as educational ambassadors. These animals, for some reason or other, cannot be released back into the wild so they live at the center and help educate the public about the purpose of the center.
There was Snow, the Arctic Fox, that was rescued from a house in Prince William County. And Apple Blossom, the opossum, whose mother was killed by a car with the babies still attached to her. Such sad stories… But BRWC is doing wonderful work to rehabilitate these animals and get them back to their natural habitat.
A Rapture Owl was released. It was a beautiful animal but definitely wild…not like the other animals we met that are being used for education. This one was found on a construction site and fit into the palm of the hand of the woman who rescued and helped rehab it. And last night she released it. 5 Weeks – Day 35
Posted in Serendipity, tagged Healing, knee surgery, Makoplasty on September 7, 2016| Leave a Comment »
Yesterday was 5 weeks since my knee surgery. The recovery is going well. I went with a procedure called Makoplasty which helped to speed recovery. (Read more here.) PT has been hard but worth it. I am sure that Jed and Lincoln’s help has made all the difference in my therapy. 🙂
Patience is not my strong suit so I feel like I should be all well by now but I know I have weeks to go before I’m able to do everything again but I am well on my way. And I am back at work-The Studio full time.
Of course, having a snake bite me during week 4 didn’t help the healing. (That’s a whole other story!)
