Garden Princess Makeover

20190521_163250.jpg I brought my Garden Princess in for a make-over.  She’s looking better. (You can read about her creation here.)  I didn’t take her in over the winter so she was a little worn but now she’s good as new.  And since we have an upcoming workshop for making these cuties I wanted her to look her best.  Why don’t you join us on Saturday, June 22nd at 2 pm to make one for your flower or vegetable garden.  They add a splash of color and whimsey to every garden.  Click here to learn more and register.

WRC Spotlight on Women

Spotlight-on-Women-1-600x600We were honored to be asked to be part of the “Spotlight on Women” coming up this Thursday at 6 pm at Samuel’s Public Library and sponsored by the Front Royal Women’s Resource Center.  We hope you will attend.  The annual Spotlight Program highlights the achievements of women in our community and also supports The Front Royal Women’s Resource Center mission of empowering women to change their world. This year’s program, Main Street Women of Warren County, will give voice to the growing number of women business leaders in our community who make Front Royal a better place to live.
Women-owned businesses currently make up 39% of the 28 million small businesses operating across the United States and the U.S. Census Bureau shows that the number of women-owned businesses increased by 45% from 2007 to 2016. The Main Street Women of Warren County panel discussion will spotlight the importance of women-owned and operated business in our community and also highlight the unique accomplishments and challenges faced by our local women business leaders.
Panelists include Jean Plauger, Owner Jean’s Jewelers, Kerry Barnhart, Owner of Vibe Properties & Front Royal Brewing Company and Kelly Walker, owner of The Studio-A Place for Learning. Felicia Hart, Director of Tourism & Community Development for the Town of Front Royal will serve as a moderator for the event.

Famous Lincoln Memory

MC LincIn my Facebook Memory feed this morning this popped up from five years ago on a trip I took to the National Gallery.  I always stop in to see this Mary Cassatt painting, “Little Girl in Blue Armchair” from 1878 because the pup in it looks exactly like Lincoln!  Don’t you think?  In reality it is a Brussels Griffon but I still think Lincoln looks like it.  Read more about the painting and it’s history here.

Plein Air in the Park Seminar

20190511_180914.jpgLincoln and I spent the day at Shenandoah National Park at the “Painting in the Park Seminar: Nature as a Starting Place” with Kevin H. Adams.  Kevin was the 2017 Artist in Residence for the park. (Read and see more about that here.) The seminar focused on the challenges of plein air painting with the focus on landscapes.  While the weather was a little damp and cool….and the clouds dropped down low on the top of the mountain so we couldn’t even see our subject for a little while, it was still a terrific seminar.

 

Kevin offered tips and suggestions to improve painting in plein air.

And being in the park is always nice.  There is so much material so I took many reference photos that I hope to paint soon.

Lincoln and Charlotte

20190510_063923.jpgEver since we lost Jed about 6 weeks ago, Lincoln has been going to work with me at The Studio.  Lincoln is 10 years old and had never been alone so the transition to being an only  dog has been difficult for him.  The depression has been horrible.  But he does perk up on Wednesdays when he goes to class.  He likes the ladies at the morning adult class and he especially enjoys all the attention he gets at the afternoon kid’s class but he just waits for the evening adult class.

When my student, Lauren, arrives she often has with her Charlotte, her little girl, who comes in to wait for her dad to pick her up.  And Charlotte LOVES Lincoln and the feeling is mutual.  She gets right down on his level and pets and hugs him and he adores it….and her.  It’s the happiest he is all week.  This week she drew a sketch of Lincoln.  It’s my new favorite thing!!!!

Metal Sculpture Along the Path

Yesterday Lincoln and I walked along the river walking path at Eastham Park to the dog park and then decided to walk a little further.  We had forgotten about all the nice things you see there…including this wonderful metal sculpture by local artist, John Urbanski.  Just a wonderful surprise.

Top of Virginia Quilters

The Top of Virginia Quilters has me come to their meeting yesterday to talk about Barn Quilts.  It was a delightful group of ladies and I enjoyed my visit with them.  Thanks Susan for inviting me to come.  And the very best part was the show and tell at the end of the meeting.  These quilters are GOOD!!!
