Christo Vladimirov Javacheff and Jeanne-Claude, were a married couple who created environmental works of art. Christo and Jeanne-Claude were born on the same day, June 13, 1935; Christo in Gabrovo, Bulgaria, and Jeanne-Claude in Morocco. (Jean-Claude died in November 2009.)  Together they created outdoor works and large indoor installations. Many criticized their work and won’t classify it as art.  To his critics Christo replied, “I am an artist, and I have to have courage … Do you know that I don’t have any artworks that exist? They all go away when they’re finished. Only the preparatory drawings, and collages are left, giving my works an almost legendary character. I think it takes much greater courage to create things to be gone than to create things that will remain.” (Read more about them here.)

While in New York City in 2005 I saw their work, The Gates.  “The Gates” was open to the public from 12 February until 27 February 2005. A total of 7,503 gates made of saffron color fabric were placed on paths in Central Park. They were five meters high and you could walk through.  It was pretty amazing.

Flower Field

I start a LOT of paintings as demonstration  pieces at Paint Parties but because I try to spend time helping the painters at the party complete their paintings I don’t always have time to go back and complete the one I started.  Yesterday I had a little time to work on one I started last week at our “Finger Painting” Party and develop it further.  The photo on the right is how it looked at the end of the Paint Party.  The shot on the left is where I took the painting.  This one is and acrylic, 16″x20″ on canvas and is available for purchase at The Studio.

Slowing Down…

Don't be in such a hurry to get to the next big thing that you miss out of the thing you planned for yesterday. Something happened a few days ago that caught me off guard.  But after a little time to reflect I realized that I have been in such a rush over the past few years to work, work, work that I have forgotten how to slow down and enjoy what I am working so hard for anyway.

For a lot of people, artists especially, understand that the last several year’s economy was rough for us.  It was hard to just keep everything together and now that things are picking up we are doing everything we can to work.  We say “no” to very little which means we are working ALL THE TIME.  We take every job that comes up or that we can schedule.  When we are not actually creating or teaching we are planning the next class,  ordering supplies for it, or doing bookkeeping that is necessary for any small business.  It’s an endless cycle.

This rush becomes a way of life, a habit that is hard to break.  But break it we must.  We are missing out on the most important part of life. We have to learn to slow down and enjoy the moment of life we are in now rather than the next one we are planning.  We may not get to that one!

Peace Poles 1 Take a look at the next fun project we will be doing at The Studio – Peace/Garden Poles!  They are based on the idea of Peace Poles.

“A Peace Pole is a hand-crafted monument that displays the message and prayer
May Peace Prevail on Earth

on each of its four or six sides, usually in different languages.
There are tens of thousands of
Peace Poles in 180 countries all over the world dedicated as monuments to peace. They serve as constant reminders for us to visualize and pray for world peace.”  (Visit the source of Peace Pole info here.)

Start thinking of what you would like your saying to be so you will be ready to paint yours.  More info to come soon.
