Yesterday I got to see an amazing exhibit at the Virginia Museum of Fine Art in Richmond….the Terracotta Army.  This whole story just fascinates me.  It was discovered in 1974 while farmers were digging a well.  Can you imagine???!!!!!  Here is a description from the VMFA website along with their link.  It’s worth the time to take a look.

“First discovered in 1974 by farmers in China, an underground army of nearly 8,000 life-size terracotta figures is known as one of the greatest archaeological finds of the 20th century. Discovered one mile east of the known burial site of the First Emperor of China (r. 221–210 BC), or Qin Shihuang, the terracotta army was created to accompany the emperor to the afterlife. This exhibition features ten majestic terracotta figures, including a cavalry horse, among 130 works that tell the story of China’s birth and one man’s lasting imprint on a nation.”  Read more here.    And while on the VMFA site there is a link in the story to an audio tour.  It’s worthwhile to listen and see the beautiful photos.

Phones!

SmartphoneIt is amazing how dependent we are on cell phones….smart phones to be precise.  Mine died yesterday morning and sent me into a panic like I haven’t had in a very long time.  It couldn’t be saved.  And we are still waiting to see if we can recover anything in it but I am the proud owner of a newer version of the same phone. I like it but it does so much more.  It will take awhile to learn it all.  We are keeping our fingers crossed that we can recover some of the content on the old one.  PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

We had a busy afternoon at The Studio yesterday.  First, our 1st Saturday Paint Party saw us painting the Koi Fish Pond…using our fingers.  That was so much fun.  Then we had two private Paint Parties with excited painters….many giving it a try for the first time.  It’s always a good time introducing new people to painting and helping those who already paint learn even more.  A great day at The Studio.

20180302_1406031095496689.jpg For a couple of years now we’ve been asked to work with international students who attend Virginia International Academy in Front Royal.  These four students are all from China and yesterday we had our first session….without electricity due to the windy weather.  Even without lights we created color wheels and discussed color mixing and painted these nice little sketches using just three colors- Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Yellow Light, and Cadmium Red Medium plus a little Titanium White.  Pretty good for just three colors in about 30 minutes!  Looking forward to working with these students for several more weeks.

We just added a couple of new Paint Parties for March.  You asked for an “Adult” party for the Little Country Church that the kids painted this week so here it is.  Paint with us on Tuesday, March 20th at 6 pm.  Click here to register.

And we are always getting requests for something for really young painters to do so we have a “Kid & Me” party coming up on Saturday morning, March 17th at 10 am for kids ages 3-7 to paint with their adult.  We’ll make this cute little door hanger just in time for Easter.  Click here to register for that one.
