Another streetscape in Waterford

Yesterday I painted with the Plein Air group in Waterford, Virginia.  Our group meets to paint together outdoors in different locations to hone our skills and enjoy the fellowship of other painters.  And Waterford was such a nice choice.  I had never even heard of it and it is just about an hour from where I live.

The entire town is a national historic village. It was founded by a Quaker from Bucks County, PA in 1733 and many of the buildings still is use were built before 1840.  It’s adorable.  (Learn more here about Waterford.)

There were so many wonderful streetscapes in this adorable little village that it was hard to choose what to paint.  I took many, many photos so that I would have some material for later.

I decided to paint the front portion of a cute little brick home so that I could do a “study in brick”.  I don’t often do streetscapes so I took this opportunity to practice working on shape and color.  I like how it has started and hope to finish it soon in the studio.  The lady who lives in the house came out to chat for a few minutes.  She was delightful.

I have missed painting with this group and hope we get a chance to paint together a couple more Thursdays before the weather gets too cold.

Paper Painting - Walking the Dog

Paper Painting – Walking the Dog

I experimented more with painting with paper this week.  It’s relaxing to rip paper and fit it onto the form that I have pre-painted.  I like searching through the paper to find the ones that have the colors that I think will work for the shades of color I need.

It’s an interesting departure from painting.

Walking the Dog”, 9″x12″, paper over acrylic paint on canvas board.

Class Demo Painting of Flowered Wall

Class Demo Painting of Flowered Wall

TVOR 5 TVOR CLASSSeveral months ago I was asked to teach painting at The Village at Orchard Ridge, a beautiful retirement community just West of Winchester.

(Here is the post I did about a demonstration I did there for the residents.)

I am having so much fun painting with these students.  They are delightful.  We meet every other week and paint together and they share with me other things they have been painting in between.

Art is such a good hobby for people especially as they age.  Anyone can do it.  It doesn’t take any special physical need.  As long as you can sit up and hold a brush you are good to paint!  This is something everyone can do.

My students there range in age from 60’s-90’s!  I am always happy to see this group of enthusiastic painters.

Collage WedI mentioned yesterday that I had a few ladies come into The Studio for a collage class.  It was spur of the moment but we had a great time working together and these are the unique pieces that they created.  I think they were very pleased with them.

Collage is such a personal medium…especially when collecting the pieces to include.  It can be very meaningful to the creator.  I am hoping to do more with collage and paper painting in the very near future.

Paper Flamingo

Paper Flamingo

I love trying new forms of painting.  That is why I went to the workshop this summer at Nimrod Hall to discover more about painting with paper.  (Check it out here.)

This past week I had the opportunity to put that new knowledge to work when I had a few ladies come into The Studio who wanted to make  paper collages.  While they worked on their pieces I used an unfinished painting that I had used as demonstration piece for a kids class to show them what to do.  I really like how the flamingo turned out.

And now I have dug out at least 3 dozen old demonstration paintings that were just lying around that I think I will rework using paper.  It’s relaxing and fun!  So why not???!!!!

Talking BeagleA few days ago I posted “The Talking Beagle”, an acrylic painting that I started during art class last week.  (See that post here.)  I finished it this week.

I just love the way beagles “talk” and when I saw the photo of this little guy baying I knew it would make a great painting.

“The Talking Beagle”, acrylic on canvas, 16″ x 20″, available for $225.
