Late Autumn is an oil on canvas panel measuring 8″x10″ and is available for $165.  I love the way some trees look at this time of the year when the leaves have left them and you can see all the limbs reaching out.

Most days I spend several hours painting, several hours working on marketing, and several hours teaching.  But sometimes I get to work with art in a different way.

Yesterday I met a young man who is a student at Lord Fairfax Community College who is doing a paper on art galleries.  He visited Delilah’s Art Gallery to gather some information for his paper.  It is always fun to talk to someone about the gallery and about art and how it is made and marketed.  Good luck Jeff with your paper.

Thanks to everyone who came by the shop to see the miniature paintings and pick up a few for Christmas gifts.  And yes, I agree, they are cool.  It’s the perfect, affordable way to give original art for Christmas to anyone.  At only $20 they are a great find!

Please come by Delilah’s to see the miniatures that are available.  There is a great selection from still life to landscape to abstract.  And remember that Delilah’s is open Thursday through Sunday each week or by appointment.   Just contact me for an appointment at kwalker@doubledogdesigns.com

Here is another couple of examples of the miniatures.

One thing that I hope to do with this blog, “Life of a Daily Painter”, is to honestly describe what it is like to be a full-time painter.  Today’s post will describe preparing for a show and reception.

Yesterday was the opening reception for my daily art show that is currently underway at Philip Carter Winery.  First, I must say many thanks to Donna Johnson who called me some months ago and invited me to show at the winery.  It is such an incredible feeling when that happens….someone actually thinks you should display your art for people to see!

Next begins the panic; can I have enough paintings that I like ready for the opening.  So you work to pull together what you hope will be an interesting collection.

Art Reception at PCWThen the preparation for the opening; the announcement; the invitation.  And then the day arrives.  It’s time to go and you are so scared that no one will come to see your work.  Always the self-doubt.  But people start arriving and they like the art.  Yeah!  Success.  It is always so rewarding when people enjoy what you enjoy doing so much.  It’s hard to describe but certainly other painters will understand.  Many thanks to everyone who came out to the reception.  It was a beautiful day and a nice afternoon.

The show at Philip Carter Winery will be on display until January.  Please make the beautiful drive out to Hume and take a look.  Thanks.

Halloween Fortune Teller at workDelilah’s, our art & gift gallery on Main Street, took part in a Halloween event for the kids Saturday night.  Rebecca came in dressed in a beautiful red mask to help me that evening.  (She and her husband have Fox Hill Pottery and they show beautiful work that you can see at Delilah’s.)  I dressed as Kelly of Delilah’s, the all-seeing  fortune-teller, and decided to break out the tarot card and tell the kids fortunes.

You can see me here telling one witch her fortune while others wait in line.   (Look how serious we are!)

Halloween Line up out the doorAnd a long line it was.  It snaked into the shop where the fortune-teller was waiting with the tarot deck .  And it went out the door…..

Halloween And the line got longer

….and in front of the shop on the sidewalk……

Halloween Line up and down the street……and down the street.  It seemed that it got longer and longer.  We couldn’t believe how successful our little fortune-telling operation was.  We gave out 600 pieces of candy and that was pretty much one per child.

I’m pretty sure that I told 300 hundred fortunes or more.  I was amazed how many wanted their fortune told and how they listened so intently to what I told them.  I really tried not to traumatize any kids.  I was the kind of fortune-teller that everyone wants to visit.  Only “good” fortunes here!  Besides, I didn’t want the kids to have to get years of therapy to recover from the fortune they were told on the Halloween of 2009 on Main Street in Front Royal.  🙂

Halloween Fortune Teller reward the patient witch with a treatAnd after they got their fortune, they, of course, got their treat!

The good news is that they all enjoyed it and no tricks were played.

Maybe the fortune-teller will come back and tell fortunes again.  You just never know….

Boo’s Birthday

Miss BooYesterday would have been Boo’s birthday.  She was a wonderful rescue shepherd who lived with us for a short time at the end of her life.  She was 12 when she came to us.  She was an elegant old girl who brought much joy to our lives in the limited time that we had her.

We were lucky that she “found us”!  And we loved her very much.

She left us in April 2004.  It’s hard to believe that it has been five years since she was here.

White Shep

This is a  painting of Boo that I have in my living room.  I see her every day and am grateful for the time we had with her.

As a tribute to her I would encourage anyone thinking of adopting a pet to consider a senior.  Older pets need good homes and they are often the best pet to bring into a busy household because they don’t need housebreaking and training.  They just need love and companionship….and they give all of that and more back to you.  Think about it.

We miss you Boo.

Kelly painting at festivalThe Festival of Leaves in Front Royal was Saturday and we had a good time despite the yucky weather in the morning.  As the day went on the weather got better.  I set up the tent and painted outside of Delilah’s.  (Thanks to Sandy Patterson, a terrific photographer who has beautiful work at Delilah’s, for taking this photo.)

 Festival Booth 1

Thanks to everyone who stopped by to watch me paint and to visit with me.  I appreciate all the nice comments about my art.

Also, thanks to everyone who registered to win the Free Art Lesson.  And don’t forget that we have classes at the Blue Ridge Arts Council on Wednesdays at 5 p.m.  We’d love for you to join us.  Just contact me at kwalker@doubledogdesigns.com if you have any questions about classes.

Strasburg Rotary Demo Fall VersionI completed this painting during the festival.  It is a fall version of the painting that I did a few weeks ago for the Strasburg Rotary Club.  Fall offers many colors to put into paintings.  It really brightens everything up!

Strasburg Rotary Demo completedThis is the original version of the painting.

Both paintings are available for purchase.  They measure 8″x16″ and are oil paintings on canvas panel.

Strasburg RotaryYesterday I was the guest speaker at the Strasburg Rotary Club in Strasburg, Virginia.  What a nice group of folks!

They made me feel very welcome as I told them what it is like to be a daily painter.  I also did a quick demonstration for them.  The photo here shows my set up with reference photo for the painting.

I’ll put the finishing touches on it and post the finished product for you in the next few days.

Thanks again to the Strasburg Rotarians for allowing me to discuss my “Life as a Daily Painter” with you.

Fog Across the ValleyWoke up to the first really cool morning of the season.  I like it.  I like cooler weather.  I like snow.  I know.  Most folks don’t, but I grew up where it was HOT all the time and I much prefer the seasons.

Cool weather brings fog in the mountains.  So I am posting this painting that I did a month or so ago of “Fog in the Valley”.  It is an oil on canvas panel, 11×14, available for $225.  kwalker@doubledogdesigns.com
