Ethan and Lincoln

Ethan and Lincoln

Because of the really stormy weather we had yesterday I only had one young artist come to class yesterday.  When this happens I let them choose what they want to paint from the paintings they may have  missed in previous classes.  Ethan chose to paint Lincoln.  And what a great job you did Ethan!  Wonderful.  You can see what the other artists did with this painting last year by clicking here.

Sleeping Jakes new bed Sleeping JakeA few months ago, my friend Jen posted a picture of her sweet boy Jake with his new bed.  I just loved it so I asked if I could paint it.  Here is my  version along with the original photo. The painting is acrylic on 12″x12″ canvas.  I love working with unusual angles  and compositions like this.  I have painted Jake before with his sister Juneau.  You can see that by clicking here.  Thanks Jen for giving me such sweet subject matter to work with this week.  (And this painting has sold!  Yeah!)

Sculpt Dog 1 front Sculpt Dog 1 side Sculpt Dog 1 backFor several years now I have wanted to learn to sculpt.  But I haven’t had any luck finding a class or instructor in my area so I just decided to give it a go myself.  Last night while watching tv I started playing with this sculpting clay that I had and just kept working til this dog came out.  🙂  I think I would really like sculpting if I had the right materials.  I am hoping to get some soon and try to do a few more pieces.  I would really like to have some instruction and then I just want to play with it for a while.  But for a first attempt I kind of like it!

Mamie with Snow Dog

Mamie with Snow Dog

Well, we got a total of 15 inches of snow at our house yesterday.  They were calling for 12-24 inches so I consider us lucky! They were so certain it would be a great deal of snow that we had both The Weather Channel and The Today Show’s Al Roker broadcasting from our little town of Front Royal, VA.  Jed's asking, "Who's in there?"

Dog Portraits on Wall I just completed a portrait of Mamie to hang on the portrait wall with the paintings of other dogs that have lived at this house with me.  Clockwise from top left you will see Eleanor Roosevelt (Rosie), Truman, Jefferson, Lincoln, Boo, and Jed Bartlett.  Now Mamie Eisenhower can be added to the wall.

Coloring Book Dogs

Coloring Book Dogs

Several years ago I did this painting I call “Coloring Book Dogs” after I watched a kid at a doctors office coloring in a book there.  He was not at all concerned about the lines as he gleefully put color on every item on the page.  Each item was a different solid color with the color running outside the lines.  That made me think, “Why don’t we all color outside the lines still?  Why are we always so careful when we color/paint?” When I painted this piece with the dogs and a couple of others with other subjects (you can see them here) I had a great time.  It was fun! So this year I am going to attempt to “color outside the lines a little more”.  How about you?

SAMSUNG 149222_1516353543693_7348484_nThis is Paisley.  She is my niece, Lexie’s, dog although I suspect she is more her  mom’s dog.  I did a silhouette painting of her.  Just a quick and fun format for pets like this.  The canvas was 20″x30″ and I painted it in acrylic.

MeMaw, oil on canvas, 6″x6″.

This is MeMaw.  She showed up at Allen’s warehouse about 3 years ago with three little yellow kittens.  She was tiny and thin and, of course, Allen took them in and started feeding her and eventually the three boys as they got bigger.  They were wild but he spent time working with them and now they all are tame with him.  They have a good life at the warehouse with Allen.  This little painting was Allen’s birthday present. (You can see Bob, one of the yellow kittens all grown up here.)
