At Art Camp yesterday our great young painters recreated Paul Gauguin’s “Tahitian Landscape”. And what beautiful recreations they made! Just take a look. They are terrific. And we do get a little paint on us when we work, don’t we Sloan? LOL

Today we celebrate the birthday of Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin (7 June 1848 – 8 May 1903) considered one of the most well-known Post-Impressionist painters. His bold, colorful and design oriented paintings significantly influenced Modern art.

” The 1892 oil painting by the French post-impressionist, Paul Gauguin, of two Tahitian girls called Nafea Faa Ipoipo (When Will You Marry?) was sold by the private collector Rudolf Staechelin, a retired Sotheby’s executive and has broken the record for the world’s most expensive single work of art. While Mr Staechelin didn’t name the buyer it was thought to be the state-financed Qatar Museums that purchased it for $300 million. The Gulf nation had set the previous record in 2011 when it paid $259 million for The Card Players by Paul Cezanne, and has spent millions more on Western modern art in recent years.”

A Few Favorites at the National Gallery

Every time I go to the National Gallery I see something new even though I must have been there a couple dozen times now. And over the years my taste in art has developed and changed. I am drawn to post impressionism more and more. And Matisse has become a very favorite so I always enjoy seeing his use of color and space. And then I discovered a Gauguin painting of Peonies (my favorite flower) that I had never seen before. What a treat!
