Another streetscape in Waterford

Yesterday I painted with the Plein Air group in Waterford, Virginia.  Our group meets to paint together outdoors in different locations to hone our skills and enjoy the fellowship of other painters.  And Waterford was such a nice choice.  I had never even heard of it and it is just about an hour from where I live.

The entire town is a national historic village. It was founded by a Quaker from Bucks County, PA in 1733 and many of the buildings still is use were built before 1840.  It’s adorable.  (Learn more here about Waterford.)

There were so many wonderful streetscapes in this adorable little village that it was hard to choose what to paint.  I took many, many photos so that I would have some material for later.

I decided to paint the front portion of a cute little brick home so that I could do a “study in brick”.  I don’t often do streetscapes so I took this opportunity to practice working on shape and color.  I like how it has started and hope to finish it soon in the studio.  The lady who lives in the house came out to chat for a few minutes.  She was delightful.

I have missed painting with this group and hope we get a chance to paint together a couple more Thursdays before the weather gets too cold.

Oxbow Sunflower CollageI spent a delightful morning painting a sunflower field at a beautiful farm north of town yesterday.

It has been awhile since I have been out to paint and I had almost forgotten how much I enjoyed it.

As with most Plein Air paintings that I do this one is almost finished but will get a little adjustment now that I have it in the studio.  You can see the step-by-step progress in this collage.

Sunflower View I  is an oil on canvas panel measuring 11″ x 14″.  SOLD!

TVOR Demo Painting Completed

I took a little time to work on the demonstration painting that I did last week at The Village at Orchard Ridge. (Read about that here and here.)  Often when doing a demo painting I get it about 75-80% completed.  I like to take questions so I talk while painting and I can’t always concentrate on details to finish up.   That is what happened with this one.  I used a larger canvas than usual because I wanted everyone to be able to see it so in the 50 minutes that I painted I did get a lot done but still needed to wrap it up.

Here are the photos side by side to see the difference.

2014-09-17 13 43 35Yesterday I met the nice young man who was the recipient of the painting that I did recently of the “View from Harrisonburg”.  (You can see the step by step photos here.)   The painting was a graduation gift as he just graduated from JMU.

And he wanted to take a photo with me when he picked it up.  And he promised to send me a photo of where he hangs the painting.

TVOR Demonstration Painting

Here is the painting that I did for the demonstration at The Village at Orchard Ridge on Tuesday night.   (See yesterday’s post.)

I worked in acrylic on an 18″x24″ canvas.  This was a one hour talk so I did not complete the painting but rather laid in the color and got a few details in so that they could see the process.  I will take some time soon to finish it up but for an hour I got a great deal done.

20140907_195548I enjoyed working with a delightful family last night for a special family reunion Paint Party.  These ladies were so much fun and we laughed and painted and had a wonderful time.  The “Moonlight Over the Mountain” theme was to honor their grandmother who often sang that song to them.  What a special Paint Party!  Thanks girls for letting me be a part of it.
