It’s not even Halloween yet and with Sandy headed our way we are hearing that we may have snow…and almost certainly power outages.

We are hunkered down here with plenty of supplies for the pups and me just waiting to see what happens.  At least I’ll get early snow reference photos this year.  🙂

The Tree Out Front, oil on canvas, 6″x8″, available for $75.  Contact kwalker@kellywalkerstudios.com

I grew up in Southeast Georgia.  It’s really low and flat there and our falls never had colors like we see here in Virginia.  My mother loved the colors so we always traveled to the “mountains” in the fall to enjoy the season.  We usually went to the Great Smokey Mountains.  The colors there are a lot like here.

Several years ago Allen and I took his 90-year-old aunt, Honnie,  over to West Virginia to visit her other nephew at his mountain house.  This is the view from their deck.  Honnie called this painting “Scattered Rugs” (oil on canvas, 18″x24″).  And she wrote a poem about it.  I’ve searched everywhere for where I put the poem and when I find it I’ll post it here for you all to see.

A few weeks ago I painted outdoors at Glen Manor Winery.  You can read about that here.  When painting in plein-air I generally get a painting to a point where it is about 85-90% complete.  Then I take it back to the studio where I put on the finishing details.

This photo shows the completed painting still on the easel with the reference photo.

The Young Artist’s painted Fall in class yesterday.  The colors outside are so beautiful that we wanted to capture that on canvas.  And they did just that!  And a great job too.  Way to go guys!

Yesterday morning I had the opportunity to paint at Glen Manor Winery on the Browntown Road out from Front Royal.  It’s lovely out there.

Painting on location, or en Plein Air, is different from any other kind of painting.  First you must have different equipment.  Then you have to narrow down the subject.  That is often the most difficult part for painters.

And usually you get to a point, about 85% complete, where you have to stop and then complete the painting back in the studio.

This is where I got with this piece yesterday.  Now I will work it a little more to finish it out.

And in the meantime I will think about lovely Glen Manor and try to find a time to return soon to paint another lovely scene.

This is the time of the year that we really see lots of complementary colors of blue and orange in the Shenandoah Valley.  The mountains so blue and so much orange and gold in the trees.  I will paint with some plein air painters today out near Browntown and hope to have some wonderful views to capture.  Enjoy the scenery today as you drive around.  These two abstract impressionist paintings, Blue Ridge V & VII are oil on 4″x8″ canvas and are available at Delilah’s for $35 each.  Contact kwalker@kellywalkerstudios.com to purchase or for more info.

I passed this really neat looking barn on the way to Sassafras Farm a few weeks ago when I was in West Virginia.  I love the way it looks.  So we painted it last week in adult art class.  If you have ever thought about painting you should come join us on Wednesdays or Thursdays for class.  Click here for more information.

Even though I taught nine hours each day at the Retreat I did find a little time one morning to paint a little scene in Plein-air.  This lovely little scene was right behind my cabin.

Here is the progress I made in about an hour.

And here is the final painting, Camp Shepherd Morning, oil on canvas panel, 8″x10″, framed and available for $195.
