Anniv Painting reworkedIn 2011 I taught an artist residency with kids at all five elementary schools to celebrate the 175th Anniversary of Warren County.  We painted a large painting that each school now hangs for everyone to see.  Read more about that project here and here.)  For that project  I painted a sample painting for the kids to see what it was that they would be producing during our time together.  In the upper left corner of each painting that the school kids produced they painted their school.

I decided to  paint out the school and paint the Government Center on the sample painting and then donate it to hang at the Center.  Here is the completed painting.  I am meeting Brandy at the Center this morning to hang the painting and I am very happy that they want to hang it right away.  I’ll try to have some photos to share soon.

Nats Park 95%

Nationals Park
Washington Nationals

The painting of Nationals Park is about 95% finished.  It is the first in the series of 30 Major League Baseball parks I am painting as part of my Kickstarter Project.  If you haven’t looked at my project PLEASE take a minute to look and pledge to make the project a reality.  Thanks!

Now back to the painting.  I often get questions about the process of finishing a painting.  The way I work is that I get a painting to a point where I feel like it’s done and then I hang it and live with it so that I can look at it for a while.  That way I can see if there is anything that I want to tweak.  Maybe there is something that needs to be made stronger or maybe there is something that needs eliminating in order for the  painting to work.  With this one I am at the “living with it stage”.  Now on to paint Orioles Field at Camden Yards.

Yesterday at The Southerlands Miss Gaylor and Miss Bobbie finished their paintings.  Didn’t they do a fine job?  And this was Miss Bobbie’s first painting.  She loved the palm tree.  (Thanks Linda C. for giving us permission to paint your tree.)  Both paintings turned out great.  Can’t wait to see what we do next week.

Monet's "Road to the Village of Vetheuil, Snow"

Monet’s “Road to the Village of Vetheuil, Snow”

Monet's "Springtime in Giverny"

Monet’s “Springtime in Giverny”

One of the best things about going to Florida to visit my friend, Linda, was that she loves art. So we visited many art venues while I was there.  And I loved every minute.  Right before boarding the airplaneMonet's Parliament to come home yesterday we stopped in at the Museum of Fine Art in St. Petersburg and what a lovely museum they have!  There was a nice Monet grouping there.  The winter and spring paintings were hung side by side so you got a nice idea of the versatility of his work and how he viewed seasons and color.  But the most interesting was the “House of Parliament”, Effects of Fog, oil on canvas, painted in 1904.  Monet did 19 canvas of the same size of the Parliament scene.  He did them depicting different seasons and times of day.  (Click here to see more info on series paintings by Monet.)  He started in 1900 painting the scene of Parliament from his hospital room.  He painted most of the 19 canvases though in his studio at Giverny changing the colors and tones of canvas to explore different times of day and seasons.  This is one way that artists improve is by exploring  light and color.  Monet was the master!

Monet's Cathedrals

Monet’s Cathedrals

One of the things I like best about going to the National Gallery of Art is that you can learn so very much.  For instance, in the Impressionist Gallery that has recently reopened after being remodeled, I came across two of Monet’s Cathedral paintings hanging side-by-side.  What a wonderful way to see Monet’s thought process as he explored color and light on canvas.  He painted this same scene, Rouen Cathedral, more than thirty times at different times of day and different months of the year in his quest to master color and light.  Monet used this learning  tool, series paintings, on several subjects including his Water Lilies, Haystacks, Poplars, and The Parliament and it’s always a treat to see several of them displayed together.

Jan's Backyard Painting

Jan’s Backyard Painting

I enjoy my adult art classes so much.  I have enthusiastic students who are excited to be painting.  I especially love it when they paint pieces that are meaningful to them.  That was the case with Janice’s recent painting of a backyard scene from  her parents home.  She talked about good memories that her family has of being together there.  You could tell that it was something she cherished and now she has a wonderful painting that she can look at and keep those thought in mind.  Great job Jan! Now take a look at what some of the other adult students are working on this week in the Wednesday classes.  Keep up the good work everyone!
