Spring is finally peeking out and the kids painted “Forsythia” this week at class. And they did a very nice job! Now come on Spring so we have more flowers to paint.

A few weeks ago I shared with you Shelly’s Poppy (Check it out here). Here is the finished painting. Shelly is a wonderful painter with a great eye for color mixing. We’ve been painting together for a couple of years and it’s always lots of fun! Great job Shelly. This is your best yet!

Valentine’s Bouquet – Two Interpretations

Last Thursday, Valentine’s Day, one of my students brought this lovely bouquet of flowers to me at class. So we immediately set it up on the table and put a solid paper behind it to make it work for us as a painting.
And the final photo in this post is Cathy, my thoughtful student who gave me the flowers and this is her version of the same bouquet. This is a great example of how different things look when you are sitting just a few feet apart but looking from a different angle. Every painter’s interpretation is different. Thanks again Cathy for the beautiful flowers.

Georgia O’Keeffe, well-known for her very large paintings of flowers, said, “I decided that if I could paint that flower in a huge scale, you could not ignore its beauty.”
Last week one of my longtime art students requested that we paint an O’Keeffe flower. We chose the Calla Lily. And didn’t the kids do a wonderful job with their interpretation?!

I enjoy my adult art classes so much. I have enthusiastic students who are excited to be painting. I especially love it when they paint pieces that are meaningful to them. That was the case with Janice’s recent painting of a backyard scene from her parents home. She talked about good memories that her family has of being together there. You could tell that it was something she cherished and now she has a wonderful painting that she can look at and keep those thought in mind. Great job Jan! Now take a look at what some of the other adult students are working on this week in the Wednesday classes. Keep up the good work everyone!

More Living With Art

This painting of Day Lilies was a birthday gift for Allen several years ago. They are his favorite so they are a repeated theme in the art at our house.
The Day Lily appears in this smaller painting hanging in the kitchen.
I try to paint things that people like. For instance, the day lilies for Allen and pet portraits for pet lovers and for me. These are the things I like so it makes it easy to hang my work and enjoy it. Difficulty in painting for me comes when I attempt to paint something I don’t particularly care about. Then the painting becomes work and when it’s not fun, it’s really hard to do.
