These are the 24 paintings that the Middle Schoolers painted as part of the 175th Anniversary of Warren County project.
They painted panels that represent their school, county and town government, tourism and agriculture in our community.

Here is Autumn with her painting of the Historic Marker that is in front of the Middle School along with the reference photo that we used for that painting. She did a fabulous job!
And this is a shot of all the young artists. Terrific work. Hopefully tomorrow we will have the photos of the finished product. Stay tuned.

For about 2 1/2 hours yesterday morning and again yesterday afternoon, we had the pleasure of working at the Blue Ridge Arts Council with 13 terrific young artists from Warren County Middle School.
It was a whirlwind of activity from the minute they arrived. They were given their canvas and started painting right away.
I am so grateful that Shelly, one of my adult painting students came to help.
And so did Linda. It would have been near impossible to get as much done as we did without Linda and Shelly working with us.
And a busy day it was. In the few hours that we had those 13 students produced 26 paintings.
Absolutely amazing!!!
Here are a few samples of the wonderful work they did. As soon as the pieces are put together I will be posting the finished works of all of these students. Many thanks again to Kym, Shelly and Linda!

A month or so ago I went down to Sylva, NC to visit with an aunt and cousin that I hadn’t seen in about 25 years. It was great seeing them. And it was good to see the differences in their mountains and ours. Here are two quick 5×7 paintings that I did when I got home. And stay tuned, the big annual sale starts soon.

All the while we are painting the huge mural with all the farm animals in the middle of the room for Suzanne McMinn we are also working on a few little side paintings.
This is Sugar, one of the 10 or so cats that live at the farm. She is just too cute.
And this is Beulah Petunia, the milk cow. She is painted on the wall leading out to where her pen is and where she gets milked. If you could see through the window on the door you would see her out there.
And if you ever watched Suzanne milk “BP” you would understand the reasoning for this composition. She puts a bucket of corn and grain in front of her and she continuously eats while Suzanne milks her. The chickens come from all around because BP drops some of the corn and they want it too!
Linda painted this nice vignette above the stove. It really adds so much to the kitchen area. Great job Linda!

I’ve been asked to chronicle the development of the painting that we did at Stringtown Rising Farm. We were so busy painting that I didn’t always think to take a photo but here is the painting from beginning to end from the photos I do have. I will post some close-ups tomorrow.

Now that I am home I want to tell you more about my adventure at Stringtown Rising Farm in West Virginia. The farm is the home to Suzanne McMinn of Chickens in the Road. For years I have followed her blog and loved her writings and photos of her life on her farm.
I even contacted her a couple of years ago about permission to use her photos of her animals as the reference material for a Farm Animal series I painted. And she graciously said yes.
When Suzanne reached out for someone to come and paint a wall for her in her newly redesigned basement I jumped at the chance to see the farm for myself.
Upon arrival Saturday afternoon we were greeted by the welcoming committee.
My friend, Linda K., went with me. She’s a great painter and was a huge help to me in completing this project in a short time. The welcoming committee loved her.
And she loved them. 
Especially Glory Bee, the giant calf!
We had to get oriented so the first thing we did was to take tons of photos of the animals to use for reference.
Besides the goats and cows, there are sheep. This is Crazy and Baby Crazy.
And of course, there are lots of chickens running around. And some are even penned up. These I think are named “Future Lunch and Dinner”!
And there is Goose who is sentenced to the chicken pen because his siblings disappeared while roaming free so he is safer here.
But if I had to choose my favorite (besides the dogs, of course) it would have to be the two baby goats, Peanut and Coal. Luckily, they are sold already or I may have had to have one of them. They were just adorable.
There are many more photos of animals…I took about three hundred in two days, and I will share more in the coming days and I’m sure I will paint many of them. After gathering material we took a look at the space and started talking about what we should paint. Over the next couple of posts I will chronicle our process. Please stay tuned.

I was thrilled when my friend Linda said she would come with me to Stringtown Rising Farm in West Virginia to paint for Suzanne McMinn, www.chickensintheroad.com .
Linda has been terrific painting all sorts of subject matter. Today it was Beulah Petunia, Suzanne’s milking cow. She turned out great!
All I did was a quick sketch and off she went. It’s been a great help having her here. She’s painted a cow, a cat, chickens, birds, bird feeders, herbs, spices, and who knows what tomorrow will bring.
Stay tuned. I hope to post many more photos of our big adventure once we finish painting today.
The Studio
