Miami Marlins Park is number 23 in the Painted Diamonds series. The retractable-roof building is air-conditioned, with separate, retractable glass walls beyond the fences. This engineering provides fans with uninterrupted views of downtown Miami while offering relief from Miami’s intense heat, humidity, and frequent rain during the Summer. It is also designed to withstand strong hurricanes. A 75-foot home run sculpture behind center field lights up and animates when the home team hits one.

I have been so busy painting ball parks that I haven’t let myself paint much else over the last few months. Yesterday I decided I needed a break from the ball diamonds to do something else. I started a nice little painting of a dock by the river that is a commission piece for a lady who is having it done for the owner of the property. I am painting in oil on an 8″x10″ canvas. I got a good start on it. Maybe I can finish it up today.

A few weekends ago I took an art workshop in Staunton at the Beverley Street Studio School. What a neat place! The workshop was all about painting animals. So, of course, the week before I went to the workshop I took photos of animals I have been wanting to paint — like a llama. I have some friends with all kinds of animals and they allowed me to come and take pictures. This Llama, I think his name is Tony, was a real character. He kept photo-bombing every time I tried to take a photo of the other llamas that were there, especially the baby llama. He and the other two adults did not want me to photo the baby. So long story short, I got lots of cool photos of Tony but no good ones of the other three. Here is the first painting of Tony. It’s a 6″x8″ oil on canvas. It is available at Delilah’s or by contacting kwalker@doubledogdesigns.com

Several weeks ago I blogged about painting on location with a group of artists to help with a fundraiser for Blue Ridge Hospice. Read about it here. The Winchester Show House and Gardens opens this Saturday and I hope you will plan to see it. The photos in the article in The Northern Virginia Daily and on their website does not do the house justice. Go see it. It will be a wonderful outing and you will be helping a very good cause. Thanks! Here’s the article: http://www.nvdaily.com/news/2013/09/winchester-showhouse-and-gardens-fundraiser-honors-headley-homes-history.php

Here are five of the “Painted Diamonds” ball park paintings that were recently being varnished and prepared for framing. (You can see that Mamie was helping me!) Once the paintings are completed I give them some time to dry thoroughly and then I went back over them, touching up any areas that I felt needed a little more work, signed them, varnished them, and put them in frames. This all in preparation for the exhibit that will be held from October 23 – November 8 at the Blue Ridge Arts Council. The Opening Reception will be Wednesday, October 23rd from 6 – 8 pm. Please mark your calendar and plan to attend. It will be a fun evening with a baseball theme (of course). I’ll post more about it as the plans are finalized.

George’s Goat, oil on canvas, 8″x6″, available for $135. After taking the workshop last weekend on “Painting Animals” it reminded me that I need to paint more animals for the Farm Animal series that I did several years ago. (You can see more about it here.) Many of these have sold so I need to come up with some more of these cute faces to add to the series. Stay tuned….next, a Llama!

Citizens Bank Park, home of the Philadelphia Phillies, is the 21st ball park that I have painted in the Painted Diamonds series.
It features a giant Liberty Bell that lights up, rings and swings back and forth!

I took so many wonderful sunflower photos while I was out painting on Thursday morning that I had to share them with my students. Logan painted this wonderful landscape from one of the photos at Young Artists class. Great job!
