March is National Quilt Month. Everyone loves a good quilt!!!! They often bring back wonderful memories. Check out the history of quilts here. Quilts were once pieced together scraps made out of necessity to stay warm. Now quilts have now developed into beautiful pieces of art planned out using amazing fabrics. During the month of March we are having a Quilt Sale at The Studio. We are selling many of the sample quilts that we made for classes. Be sure to take a look and as we celebrate this month use the code QUILT to get 10% off the already low price of our quilts. (Remember the post last month about the cost of making a quilt. Here it is again.) Go to this link to see all the quilts we have on sale this month and pick up one for yourself or as a gift for a special someone. You have the option of picking it up locally or having it shipped. Select the option you prefer on check-out.

Yesterday you met the second class that has started the Row Quilt project. Here is the first class with blocks for the another row. This one features the Monkey Wrench and the Friendship Star. These quilters did an amazing job with their blocks and selecting fabrics for their quilts. Beautiful work! Stay tuned as we share more of our Row Quilt adventure.

Yesterday our second group of quilters started their Row Quilt. They worked up 2 rows of 4 patches to make a great checkerboard design in the Quilt as You Go method. Here they are showing off the front 4 patch and the backing fabric they have selected for their quilts. I can’t wait to see how they turn out! Nice work ladies. See you next month!

This group did a fabulous job painting a seaside cottage in gouache. Great work all around! Check out the upcoming events at The Studio here and join in the creative fun.

As we are coming up on National Quilt Month let’s look at the cost to make a quilt. Many people are surprised at how much goes into making one. The chart above gives you a look at the average cost to make a full size quilt. This is just the material costs and doesn’t take into account the time it takes to select the fabric, cut the patches, sew the pieces together, join the design, quilt the layers and bind the quilt. Many, many hours of labor go into a quilt. That is why the costs of a quilt can seem high. But when you consider all that goes into making a beautiful quilt the price is worth it! Next week, during National Quilt Month, we will be holding a sample quilt sale….selling the samples we have made for classes at The Studio. The quilts we will offer will go for basically the cost of the material. That will be a great deal so be sure to watch for the sale to start soon.

I completed this Starlight, Starbright quilt based on a Missouri Star Quilt Company pattern. I altered it a bit with a border around the star. This one I made as a traditional quilt top and sent it out to be longarm quilted. It turned out great! I love the look. It was made using charm packs (5″ squares) plus some yardage for the star and borders. I’m excited to share this one now as we have a tour group leaving next month to go visit the Missouri Star Quilt Company in Hamilton MO. We will be making several stops along the way there and back to visit fabric and quilt related businesses. We’ll be gone for 9 days and I know we will see and acquire lots of great quilt related items. Stay tuned to see more about our adventure. And in the meantime watch in the next few days our Quilt Sale.
