If you recall, I had an interesting commission before Christmas from a gentleman to paint three paintings for his family of scenes from North Carolina where they spent time as kids and that had meaning for them. (See the posts for those paintings here, 2nd one here, and the last here.) I got the nicest email from him this past week and he gave me permission to share it:

I’ve been invited to teach again at a creative retreat with my friend Suzanne McMinn of Chickens in the Road fame. The Creative Blast Retreat will be Saturday and Sunday, April 26-27, and will feature cooking like Julia Child and painting on canvas as well as gourds. Read all about the retreat here. Space is limited to a dozen or so people so instruction will be very personal. Be sure to sign up quickly if you are interested. You don’t want to miss it as it’s held at Suzanne’s Sassafras Farm where we will be surrounded by animals.
Here is just some of what you will learn in the cooking portion of the retreat: “Breadbaking – yeast dough from French-style loaves, baguettes to various types of rolls and even pizza; Cakes – Julia’s famous chocolate cake; Dessert – creme brulee and any kind of mousse; Main Dish – classic chicken fricassee!
And on top of that we will also be painting! Doesn’t this sound like a fun 2 days?! Join us.
(You can read here about past retreats that I taught there. )

I finally got back to the demonstration painting from the 1st Saturday Paint Party and finished it up. I often start demo paintings while teaching and don’t get back to them to finish because I get busy helping students complete theirs. I like this one and wanted to wrap it up.
The next 1st Saturday Paint Party is this Saturday, March 1 at 4 pm. There are a few spaces left to paint a landscape this time so register today.

Yesterday I attended an event with women owned businesses with an emphasis on specialty items…like my hats. This was what I have been making hats for over the last few weeks. There are still some hats available and you can see them at Delilah’s. Still a little more cold weather coming this winter so you might as well look good in it! 🙂

I don’t know about you but I am always seeing these really good-looking recipes that friends share on Facebook or Pinterest. I have tried a few and they are never as good as they look. But I recently ran across this one that is AMAZING! I have made it several times and it doesn’t last long. It’s great for a breakfast bread or a dessert. Hope you enjoy it too! You can print the Apple Cinnamon Bread recipe at this link.

As I continue to work on the book series (I haven’t given up…just been misdirected for a week or so) we decided to paint a book with my young student yesterday. Here is Ethan with a wonderful painting of an open book and glasses. We painted side by side so you see his version on the left, mine on the right and the reference photo above my painting.
We decided a plain background was too dull so we put “wallpaper” on the wall behind our tables. Great job Ethan!

Yesterday I had a private lesson with one of my newer students, the mom of one of the young artists that I teach. She had wanted to come to the last Paint Your Pet Portrait Party but couldn’t so we did this yesterday. Great job! Mattie looks great. I know you are proud of her.

As I promised last week I have written out the pattern for my basic hat pattern. I am not a pattern writer but I think it makes enough sense that if you crochet you can get the idea of what to do. BASIC HAT PATTERN
I hope you enjoy it! And for those who don’t crochet these hats are available at Delilah’s on Main Street in Front Royal or just contact me.
