Who knew that a dozen painters could make so much noise!!!

Great job kids.  The windows look great!   And thanks Town of Front Royal for giving these kids such a public place to show off their art.

Relay for Life Sample Painting

Relay for Life Sample Painting

Last night I was invited by the organizers of the “Relay for Life” committee to do a demonstration painting for their kick-off meeting.  Their theme this year is “Paint Your World Purple”.  So I did a demo of what our mountains would look like purple.  Here is the sample painting I did for them.   After the demo we invited people to paint with paper and create an inspirational piece to take with them.  Here are some of the wonderful collages they created. wpid-wp-1447764332383.jpg wpid-wp-1447765507608.jpg wpid-wp-1447765508070.jpg wpid-wp-1447765508415.jpg wpid-wp-1447765508752.jpg wpid-wp-1447765509089.jpg wpid-wp-1447764332837.jpg wpid-wp-1447764333610.jpg wpid-wp-1447764333947.jpg

Van Gogh's Starry Night

Van Gogh’s Starry Night

There are so many thoughts and explanations on why so many people are drawn to Van Gogh’s Starry Night.  Here is  really interesting one.  Be sure to when you click this link to read it that you also watch the short video explanation.  Fascinating!

Blanket with edging

Blanket with edging

Just completed a crocheted Granny Stripe Combo pattern in a blanket for an upcoming crochet class at The Studio.  I was asked by a couple of our best clients to offer some options for a simple yet beautiful pattern for blankets and lap throws.

I saw this one several times on Pinterest and loved the look of it with the change in colors and raised stitches from the pattern change.  Plus the best part is that it is all double crochet stitches and a great way to learn one of the hardest things for new crocheters – where to put the last stitch on a row in order to keep the edges straight.

A bonus for the class will be this very easy but nice edging that can be used on most any blanket.  The date for this class will be announced soon.

Snowman Time

A fun little snowman painting that I worked up for an upcoming private birthday paint party.  They requested a snowman.

Part of the fun of doing private paint parties is hearing people’s ideas on what they would like to paint.  I love their ideas.

Check out information here for holding a paint party for you and your friends and family.

Logan

Hannah

Hannah

Logan and Hannah have both been painting with me for several years.

They moved from the kids class to the adult class a few years ago and they are doing terrific work.  They love a challenge and take on detailed pieces.

Logan is a fan of silent movies and has reproduced and old silent movie poster and Hannah worked up a beautiful streetscape.

Terrific work girls!

“A painting of an outstretched nude woman by the early-20th-century artist Amedeo Modigliani sold on Monday night for $170.4 million with fees to Liu Yiqian, a former taxi driver turned billionaire art collector, in a packed sales room at Christie’s. It was the second-highest price paid for an artwork at auction.”

“The sale propelled Modigliani into the $100 Million at Auction Club, whose members include Picasso (three times), Bacon, Giacometti (three times), Warhol and Munch.”  Read the New York Times article here.  Fascinating!

Chamber of Commerce’s Women in the Know

The Chamber of Commerce’s “Women in the  Know” gather every quarter to network and learn.  Last night they painted.  And they painted some wonderful fall river scenes.  Great job everyone!

Rick Novak, Kellly Walker and Jeff LeHew

Rick Novak, Kelly Walker and Jeff LeHew

Last night I was asked as owner of The Studio – A Place for Learning to serve on a panel to share “The 3 Most Important Things I Learned the 1st Two Years in Business”.  The meeting was hosted by the Valley Entrepreneur Network, a regional networking group of business owners.  I was proud to be asked to speak along with Rick Novak, owner of Royal Cinemas and Royal Bowling, and Jeff LeHew, owner of Via Satellite.  It was an interesting mix of businesses both in type and size.  Here is part of what I shared that works for me at The Studio:

  1. Enthusiasm is contagious.  If you are truly excited about what you are doing your clients/customers will be too.  And they will want to be a “part” of it.
  2. M*A*K*E a Plan.  Don’t be afraid to MODIFY what you are doing if it is not working.  Change course.  Continually ADD new programs and classes.  Experiment with new ideas.  Review regularly what you are doing and KEEP what works and ELIMINATE what doesn’t.  Be realistic.  If it’s not bringing in income spend your time on something that will.
  3. Marketing takes a lot of time but in this day and time not as much money as it once did.  If you are willing to work at it social media is inexpensive and a great way to share your business to an interested population.  Trust your instincts on where to spend time marketing.  You know your business better than anyone so you probably know best what your customers read or listen to so you know best how to reach them.

It was hard to limit my remarks to just three things!  For anyone who has started a business you know that you learn something new everyday!  But there is nothing like doing something you enjoy and sharing it with others which is my case.

Kids Class 1 Kids Class 2Last week the kids painted this lovely fall color landscape.  They enjoy painting but I think they enjoy even more picking on each other when we take our photo at the end of class.  So silly!
