I started this quilt while at the quilt retreat a few weekends ago. I took my 1961 tan Featherweight to the retreat to piece several quilts that I was working on there. This little machine is a jewel! It has the most perfect stitch so it is gem for piecing. This quilt, the Baltimore Square, involves sixteen fabrics and many 2 inch strips that are then cut apart and sewed back together again. You know that is the craziness of quilters….taking perfectly good fabric, cutting it apart and then sewing it back together, over and over. LOL! So since getting home from the retreat I brought out the little machine that I named Barbara Ann after my mom. (Featherweights are often named and all of mine are. Read more about that here. ) And she has been working away the last two days to sew these pieces together. When this quilt is completed there will be almost 2900 2 inch pieces all together to make a beautiful quilt. I’ll share it when it’s done.

On Monday we had the opportunity to hear Susan Bloss speak at the Rappahannock Library as she gave a presentation on Decoding Quilts. It was very interesting as she talked about the different elements involved in making a quilt. Susan did a fabulous job! She’s a terrific quilter and shared so many of her creations with us. If she offers it again be sure to go hear her.

Arrived yesterday in New Freedom, PA for a quilting retreat with about 20 other quilters….a great group of woment with beautiful ideas and skills. It’s so much fun to see what others are doing. I put together a quilt that I have been working on for a possible class. I call it the “Perfect Picnic Quilt” because it has a checkboard in the center so after you eat your picnic you can play checkers! Fun, hun???!!!! Watch for an upcoming class. And watch for more photos of the beautiful things these quilters are doing here.

One of the amazing groups of quilts that we saw at QuiltCon in Raleigh was these called “Swimming Upstream”. They were fascinating. Such a simple subject but who would have thought to make it into quilts.
