The kids painted this cute sheep in class yesterday. Whenever I give them the option of something to paint they ALWAYS choose the animal option. 🙂 And didn’t they do an excellent job on this little guy?! We have kids classes every Wednesday at 4:15 at The Studio. Contact kwalker@kellywalkerstudios.com if you want to have your young artist come join us.

Last night at The Studio we had a hand built pottery class with Denise Kupiszewski from The Mud Peddler Studio in Shepherdstown. We created some awesome cell phone stands and wall pockets. And it didn’t take long to create these terrific pieces. What fun to try something new! Thanks Denise. We can’t wait to see the finished products when they come back next week.

“Jump down turn around pick a bale of cotton; Jump down turn around pick a bale a day.” Traveling along you never know what you will see that will make great paintings. Always snap a photo or two because you just don’t know when you’ll need it to use for a painting. On my trip home from Raleigh last weekend I saw many, many fields of cotton. I had to stop and get a photo of a few. (The lyrics above are from an old folk song that I kept singing while we driving back as we passed the fields. My traveling companions had never hear so here it is in an original version by Leadbelly….a great old folk song. Listen here. It’s only a few minutes…worth listening.)

YIKES!!! A grasshopper has been found in Van Gogh’s painting of the Olive Trees. One of the things that painters who work outdoors (en Plein air) face is the elements….bugs, dirt, etc. And it appears that Van Gogh dealt with them too. Here is what he wrote to his brother, Theo, about it in 1885: “But just go and sit outdoors, painting on the spot itself!” Vincent wrote. “Then all sorts of things like the following happen — I must have picked up a good hundred flies and more off the 4 canvases that you’ll be getting, not to mention dust and sand … when one carries a team of them across the heath and through hedgerows for a few hours, the odd branch or two scrapes across them….” Read the entire article about the grasshopper discover here ….and see the grasshopper!

I worked on a sample painting for an upcoming private party. They asked for a simple winter night scene. We are thinking we may add either a small cardinal or lights in the bare tree. Did you know you can set up a private paint party for you and your friends? It’s a great way to celebrate the holiday or have a party. No need to worry about planning… you can just choose a date and the painting and we’ll provide a link for you to invite everyone. Then you all come and create a marvelous work of art while enjoying some great times and laughs with friends. Contact kwalker@kellywalkerstudios.com to arrange your party today!
