The Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon 1I’ve always wanted to see the Grand Canyon.  Everyone who had been to it said that it was amazing….not possible to describe…you had to see it to believe it.

And they were right!

Grand Canyon 4It was a beautiful clear day when we were there and you could see for miles and miles.  There were huge puffy clouds hanging perfectly over the cliffs.  It was almost fake looking.  I said that the same people who perpetrated the fake “moon landing” must have painted a huge screen and hung it up here for people see.  It just didn’t look real.

Grand Canyon 8But it was real.  We had a great view of the Colorado River running through it.  Unbelievable!

Tower 2The tower overlook at the southeast end of the canyon gave wonderful views of the canyon not to mention that it was quite photogenic itself.

Allen & Bob Sightseeing 1Allen and Bob didn’t miss an opportunity to read about all that we were seeing.

Back from Vacation

Red Rock Hotel ViewJust back from the Labor Day Weekend in Sedona with friends.  I hope to post some red rock paintings soon.  Saw many wonderful views and landscape there.  It’s hard to believe how different everything there looks compared to the Shenandoah Valley.

Bell Rock 3We hiked each day.  Bell Rock and Cathedral were right down the road from our hotel so we were able to hike there easily.  We saw rattlesnakes on one walk.  I HATE snakes!!!

LizzardI’m not crazy about lizards either but we saw lots of them so I had to get at least one shot.

Catheral 1So many nice landscape views with the arid countryside in the foreground.  I hope to paint many of them.

Tomorrow, our day at the Grand Canyon.  Awesome!

Shenandoah River from the Low Water Bridge

Shenandoah River from the Low Water Bridge

Don’t forget that this Saturday is the “On the River” Festival in Front Royal.  For more information on the festival you can go to this link:  http://www.canoecapital.org/

As I have said many times, as an artist I am so lucky to live in the Shenandoah Valley with the river and mountains and valley views.  It is a gold mine for painters.  I hope others will come out on Saturday and celebrate one of the treasures that is ours.

A Great Book

I was asked recently by someone who paints as a hobby what one who paints for a living does for a hobby.  Good question.  One of the things I really enjoy when I am not painting is reading.  I read a lot actually, especially at night….trouble sleeping and all that.  Anyway, I thought I might share, from time to time, a really exceptional book just in case anyone else likes to read too.

Fron Wikipedia Listing

The book I want to tell you about today is one that was recommended to me a year or so ago called Travels with Charley in Search of Amercia by John Steinbeck.  Yeah, I know.  That’s what I thought too…..sounds stuffy.  But trust me, it’s not.  I bought the book and laid it on my bedside table and it just waited there for over a year until finally I decided to try to muttle through it.  Boy was I surprised when I found that I couldn’t put it down.

It’s all about a road trip that Steinbeck took in this specially made camper with his dog Charley.  He said he did it to get back in touch with America.  The amazing thing to me was that many of the problems that he discusses as he travels around are still some of the same ones we are dealing with today.  And he made this trip in 1960!

This is one of those books that you will be so amazed by that you will read passages aloud to friends.  I know, because that is what I kept doing.  Trust me, you’ll like this one whether you like dogs, you like travel, or just like a good story.  Pick it up and give it a spin.

PC Winery 2I took a ride yesterday out to Philip Carter Winery in Hume, Virginia.  It is a lovely area with the beautiful vines all green and lush and the mountains in the background.

They have a lovely building and tasting room.  And, luckily, for us artist and those of you who love art, they are inviting Virginia artist to display their work in their new addition, Cleve Hall.

I am very excited that they have asked me to have a show there later this year.  In the meantime, I will be painting there on location soon.

PC Winery 1There will be many great scenes to paint as they have buildings, ponds, and lots of vines to paint.  I can’t wait.

Being there put me in mind of last October when I was asked to paint at another winery nearby.

Below is the result of a couple of Saturdays working at the vineyard.

The other great things about the trip out to Philip Carter yesterday was making new friends.  Many thanks to Donna, the events coordinator at the winery and her companion, Jordan.

JordanJordan and I became friends in the short time that I was there.
