Impressionist's Poppies

Impressionist's Poppies

There are many days as a painter when I spend a great deal more time on marketing and promotion than I ever do on painting.  Yesterday was one of those days.

I spent the morning with a group of ladies from the Garden Club in Front Royal, where I did a demonstration for them and talked about painting and what it is like to sell art for a living.  They were a delightful group of ladies and we were hosted at a the lovely home of Jean Orsi.  While doing the demo on the screened in porch at the back of her home we got an unexpected surprise.   A HUGE black bear went running across the yard and over the fence into the woods behind her home.  What a shock!  And he was big!  I wish I could have taken a photo but I had brushed in hand instead of my camera.  Darn.

Many thanks to Darlene Goldman for inviting me to speak to your lovely group of ladies.  It was great fun for me.

Set up to Demo

Set up to Demo

And since yesterday was the 3rd Thursday, it was Art Walk Night in Front Royal and I set up to do a demonstration at Delilah’s Art & Gifts on Main  Street.  It was very hot outside last night so I set up  inside.  I couldn’t decide what to paint so since I had the palette from the morning’s demo, I decided to do another version of the poppies that I had painted for the Garden Club.

Little Helper 2

The good news is that we had a lot of people come out for the art walk last night.  It was a great crowd.  And thanks to all who came into Delilah’s.

It’s always fun when little ones come with their parents.  I was painting and this young lady came in with her folks and she was obviously a little tired but when I asked her if she would like to try painting she immediately said yes!

So her dad helped her stand on the stool and she took the brush and went to work.

Little Helper 3

She wasn’t bashful at all about putting the brush to canvas….

And I always like getting a little help with my work!  Thanks!

Speaking to Linden Rotary Club

Speaking to Linden Rotary Club

I spoke to the Linden Rotary Club yesterday morning.  They meet at 7 a.m. at The Apple House.  It’s a great group of folks doing great service work in our community and worldwide.

Signal Knob View for Rotary

I also did a demonstration for them of this painting.  It is a version of a view of Signal Knob.

Most people are surprised to hear how much time is actually spent painting and how much time it takes to promote and market the work.  It takes a lot more time to get the word out there to sell the work than to actually create it.

Thanks to Debbie Grove for inviting me to speak to the Linden Rotary Club.  I appreciate your support.

Shenandoah River from the Low Water Bridge

Shenandoah River from the Low Water Bridge

Don’t forget that this Saturday is the “On the River” Festival in Front Royal.  For more information on the festival you can go to this link:  http://www.canoecapital.org/

As I have said many times, as an artist I am so lucky to live in the Shenandoah Valley with the river and mountains and valley views.  It is a gold mine for painters.  I hope others will come out on Saturday and celebrate one of the treasures that is ours.

View from the River BridgeView from the River Bridge” is an oil on canvas panel measuring 9″x12″.  I started this painting several weeks ago as a lesson in the Wednesday night art class.  We did the landscape work with the fields, mountain and river.  Then when I brought it home and looked at it for awhile I decided that it needed something more.  The photo I used was one I snapped while driving along.   (See the photo by clicking this link. https://lifeofadailypainter.com/2009/06/30/serendipity/  )

So I added the bridge to the painting.  This is one that will be entered in the upcoming River Show at the Blue Ridge Arts Council in Front Royal.

Jed ThunderOne of the hardest things to deal with as a pet owner is when one of the babies we love so much is frightened by thunderstorms.  I’ve had a couple of dogs that have thunder fear.

Jed, my newest boy, is scared to death of the sound….also fireworks.  I’ve tried lots of things and what seems to work best for him is when I can predict the storm and give him some Rescue Remedy and then put on his thunder shirt.  (This photo is of Jed in the window seat with his thunder shirt on after a storm has passed.  Thanks Carol Ann for taking this photo for me.)

The shirt serves to swaddle him and make him feel safe.  There is a commercial product on the market called Anxiety Wrap that promotes this swaddling effect.  But it’s expensive so I use a really tight t-shirt.  It sounds funny but it does seem to help.  Jed also has a special place that he goes when the thunder starts.  His spot is in the bathroom in a special little bed.  All of these things that we have been doing for Jed over the last few months has helped him.   At least now when the storm starts he doesn’t totally freak out like he did in the beginning.  Hope our solutions might help others out there with scared babies.  If you have a solution that has worked, please add a comment here to share it with the rest of us.

Visit from Relatives

Today is the last day to get an item in the Dog Days of Summer Sale.  Just scroll through the postings from last week to see what is available.  Then email me at  kwalker@doubledogdesigns.com  with your desired purchase.

As I mentioned briefly last week I had family visiting for a few days.  My niece, Morgan, and sister-in-law, Debbie, were here.  You met Tam, the Westie in one of the posts last week – Day 5 of Dog Days of Summer Sale.

Morgan & Tru on 1st day home Dec 99My “boys” are always thrilled when they come because Morgan has loved them forever.  Especially Truman.  She came to see him the first day he came to live with me when he was 5  1/2 weeks old and she was just 6 years old.

It’s hard to believe that either of them were this small at one time but they were.  This photo is from December 1999.

Morgan & Tru squeezeAnd ever since she has squeezed, and kissed, and hugged, and anything else you can do to love an old basset hound.

Truman has always been great with children and I think it is because Morgan did everything a kid possibly could to him and Jeffie when they were little and they just rolled with it.  They loved it.

And Truman still loves her.

Jed & Morgan 1Jed is learning how much fun it can be too when he sleeps in the bed with her.  He knows that he is not allowed under the covers but when Morgan is here he jumps right in, knowing that it will be all right.  (Look how grown up Morgan is now!)

Tru in Morgans bedTruman knew that he wasn’t allowed to lay on the quilts and sheets but because we had company, he took advantage.

Tam on Sofa LookoutAnd because Truman was so tired from doing all the things he is not suppose to do, Tam had to take up the watch out post on top of the sofa to guard us all from whatever might show up in the front yard to bother us.  He did a good job!

Tru in Roses 1And just because we always have, Morgan and I played dress up with Truman one night.  We found a prissy rose collar that once belonged to Rosie and we decided to put it on Truman’s head.

He let us….

Tru in Roses 2…But only because he was very tired.  Having company really wears an old boy out.

Isabella's Lesson 1Isabella is my private student.  She comes once a week and we work in acrylics.  She’s a very quick study and has done some really nice little paintings.

Isabella's Lesson 2Here she is hard at work.

Isabella's Lesson 3

And with her finished painting.  A really nice result.  Good job Isabella!

In addition to the Wednesday Night Oil Painting Class that I teach at the Blue Ridge Arts Council (see the Art Class tab at the top of the page) I offer private lessons.  I have had several young students.  I usually don’t work with students under the age of 12 but every once in awhile there is a “Promising Picasso” that I teach.

A Sunflower for Carol AnnHere is a sunflower for Carol Ann!  It’s her birthday and sunflowers are her favorite.  Happy Birthday!

Carol Ann is our friend from West Virginia.  She has the two Great Danes that my “boys” love so much.

First, Truman fell in love with Bella or maybe Bella fell for Truman.  She used to treat him so bad in the beginning as evidenced by this photo of the two of them.

Bella LOOOOVES Truman

But they grew out of that silly play….or Bella grew up rather.  Now she is way to big to be stepping all over the “old man”.  But lucky for her Jed has come along and Bella and her brother Jam have made Jed an honorary member of their family and Jed is loving it!

Tug of War 1Tug of war is their favorite game and Jed thinks he is as big as they are.  He says, “It’s hard to be a Great Dane when your legs are this short!”

And all they while they are playing Jed really thinks that Carol Ann is his mom.  He loves her better than anyone and would really like to live with them and be a country dog full-time.  So what do you think Carol Ann?  Maybe for your birthday?

Red Chair in progress 1 (Small)Lucky me!  I got a new easel for my birthday last week so I did a practice run with it this weekend out at the cabin and painted the Red Chair that I posted about a few days ago.

Love the new easel and the ease of set-up.  It makes plein air painting so much easier.

Red Chair Finished (Small)And here is the finished sketch.  It is an oil on canvas panel measuring 8″x10″ and is SOLD .

I love that chair!

Metal Chair RedDo you ever see something, an object that is fairly common, but it reminds you of earlier times?  That is what I think every time I see one of these old metal chairs.  My grandmother, we called her Big Mama, had chairs like this in her yard.  When we were small kids we would go visit at least once a week, and Big Mama, Papa  and Mama would sit and rock while the three of us kids ran and played in the yard.  I can still see them sitting there each time I see one of these chairs.

I just found this great old metal chair at a yard sale in West Virginia a few weeks ago.  I snapped it up for a mere ten bucks and promptly painted it red.  Big Mama, Papa, and Mama are all gone now but every time I walk past this chair or sit in it to rock I think of them.  I think it was a small price to pay for memories that special.
