Shen River 3 Shen River 2The walking path to and from the dog park along the Shenandoah River offers so much inspiration.  Every season of the year it’s beautiful.  This is how it looked yesterday morning as the “kids” and I strolled there.

Constitution

Today, and every day, we should thank our veterans for the sacrifices they have made to keep us free.  Most of us have family members or loved ones who have given service to one of the military branches.  Brother is retired from the Army.  He served as an aviator during Desert Shield/Desert Storm.  I am proud of his service.

Since I was 16 years old I have carried a copy of the U.S. Constitution in my purse. (I am on my 4th copy as they get worn and fall apart after the wear and tear of 10 or 15 years.)   I carry it for several reasons:  1)  I like to read it.  I don’t think enough people have and 2) it ends many arguments when people start quoting the Constitution and are positive they are correct in their opinion.

I am grateful to every veteran who has served who has made it possible for me to carry this all these years.

New York Times photo

New York Times photo

After being considered a fake for almost 100 years this painting has been declared authentic.  Exciting news for art lovers and especially Van Gogh enthusiasts.  You can read more about it in this New York TImes article.

The value is probably tens of millions of dollars.  It will be exciting to see what happens with this one.  Hopefully it will end up somewhere where we  can see it in person rather than in a private collection hidden away.  Guess we will just have to wait and see.

Yesterday I was thrilled to meet a delightful couple who have been collecting my art for a couple of years.  They live in Maryland but have a second home in north Georgia which gave us lots to talk about since I am from Georgia.  When they told me they were going to be in the area this weekend we made arrangements to finally meet.  And I am so glad we did.  It was great fun to hear how they have been following my blog and where they are hanging the pieces they have bought from me as well as other painters that they have collected.  They are subscribers of the Daily Painter Movement and collectors of local art.

I love hearing people talk about buying what they like.  When people ask me about collecting art that is what I always suggest.  Don’t try to predict the future and what may be of value down the road.  Buy what you like.  Buy what you want to live with and look at now.  Buy what gives you enjoyment.  And mix it up.  Group art and fill up the walls.  You don’t have enough until your walls are sagging from the weight of it.  (At least that is what I think.)

I buy art from painters I admire.  I buy art in order to study their technique and learn and hopefully become a better painter.  The art I hang in my bedroom is often what I like best because I see it first thing in the morning and last thing at night.  And I can sit and look and study it, which I often do.  And I move art around, rearranging it from time to time in order to be able to study other pieces.

So collect original art and buy what you like.  And meet the painters if you can.  If they are like me they will enjoy hearing your stories and sharing theirs.

Dickey Ridge Plein Air 3

One of Kelly’s paintings at Dickey Ridge Overlook in the Shenandoah National Park

I am very excited to share with you today that I have recently joined a wonderful group  called “Paint the Parks“.  Their mission as artists is to paint scenes from our wonderful parks all over the world and share them with collectors.

As their website states, ” The idea of Paint The Parks is to visit protected park lands and paint them ~ in your home area and all around the world. What is a “Park?” Any nature reserve set aside for conservation and public use qualifies as a “Park.” We want to preserve these precious places for future generations.  Artists can paint the parks en Plein Air (on site), or in the studio. But only list the paintings of places you have actually visited. There is no substitute for experiencing the majesty of the out of doors, and being in nature’s temple. The energy and soul of a place has a visceral effect on your entire being.”

When a painting is purchased a percentage of the sale goes to a park foundation.  I am very pleased to be a new part of this movement.  I hope you will take a minute to visit their website and see what Karin Leonard, the artist with a vision to help save our beautiful parks, is doing through this project.

I have added a Paint the Parks page to my website that I will dedicate to park paintings so it will be easy to go to one place to see them all.  I have many more paintings to add to the page and will get them all listed soon.  Thanks for looking and for anything you can do to help preserve park space.

Janet's Kitchen Art I love it when people who have collected my art share with me photos of it in their homes.  Here is one from Janet who has purchased several of my paintings, most recently “The Farmer’s Market”.  This is how she has it  hanging in her kitchen with two poppy paintings that she also purchased.  Love it!  Thanks for sharing this with me, Janet.  And thanks for collecting original art!!!

The first painting posted on my blog over 5 years ago.

One of the first of two paintings posted on my blog’s beginning day over 5 years ago.

Today I hit a milestone.  On February 18, 2008, I started writing the “Life of a Daily Painter” blog.  Today marks the 1500th post.  In the beginning I tried to paint something different every day and share that on the blog.  The first year I posted over 300 new paintings.  As the blog developed I started to share paintings by my students.  This became a favorite feature.  Everyone loved seeing what the art students, both young artists and seasoned ones, were creating.

Lately I have also been sharing information on art travel.  When I am fortunate enough to get to see exciting exhibits and museums I try to bring that to my readers.  And during all this I have continued to share my paintings as well.  It has been a really fun experience.  And many thanks to all of you for following my blog and sharing it with your friends and family.

I really appreciate the support and encouragement!
