pk-hydrangeasYesterday it was hydrangeas that I painted using the knife.  (This one is SOLD!) I am loving this method.  Can’t wait to get home and really spread out and do some of these on larger canvas.  We leave today after having a really great time at Art of the Carolinas.  I have two friends who came with me and they have had some interesting classes as well.  It is so much fun to be the student for a change!

pk-sunflowersStill enjoying Art of the Carolinas in Raleigh.  Yesterday the Trade Show opened so I spent several hours browsing the vendors and picking up supplies.  Lots of great bargains.  Boy that was FUN!!!!  Then I had time to work on more paintings.  Here is another palette knife piece that I did.  This is fun too!  The Black-eyed Susans is on a 12″ x 12″ canvas with frame and is SOLD!  The Tulips from yesterday is a 9″x 12″ and is available also.  Email me at kwalker@kellywalkerstudios if you can’t live without them.  🙂

Dragonfly on Wood Type by Duane Keiser, oil on board, 7″x6″

About 10 years ago I read an article in USA Today about a Virginia man who started the “Daily Painting” movement.  Duane Keiser was bringing art to everyone by making small paintings each day that were affordable and easily accessible online.  At the time I was trying to decide which direction to take….either work again in the non-profit world or paint full-time.  The concept of daily painting was intriguing to me so I decided to give it a try.  I started daily painting the very next day and soon after started the blog, Life of a Daily  Painter, and have been doing it ever since.  That was in 2006…and it’s been a terrific journey that has led to The Studio.  I continued to follow Keiser’s blog.  He started painting much bigger pieces and less of the small paintings but from time to  time he still does  small pieces that he offers through eBay.  And while I have bid on them in the past it is only recently that I acquired one…..and I am thrilled to have it.  This is a terrific example of his small works.

You may know that we offer Kid’s Art Class every Wednesday from 4:15-5:15 for ages 7-13 but did you know that we offer private lessons for younger kids.  Here is Marie with her little painting of her pup that she did in two lessons with us.  And Sophia and brother Joey did these lovely barn paintings this week at their lesson.  Kids love creating beautiful art.  Do you have a young painter who might like to paint with us?  Send us a message and we’ll get started.  kwalker@kellywalkerstudios.com

Last night I spent some time at the Clarke County Ruritan Fairgrounds helping judge the Heritage Festival Gourd competition.  If you have some time on your hands this weekend and like heritage arts the Clarke County Fairgrounds is the place to be.  There are LOTS of gourds for sale….large ones to make birdhouses, small ones to make decorative items….as well as other beautiful arts that are becoming lost in our technological world.

The festival, sponsored by the Virginia Lovers’ Gourd Society, is today, Saturday from 9-5 and Sunday from 9-4.  (Admission is a non-perishable food item for the local food bank.)

There were some beautiful entries in the contest and this year the group has become a nationally sanctioned competition.  It is worth the ride over to see this weekend.

More Mermaids…

I was asked yesterday how my mermaid turned out.  I did a quick one Monday afternoon so the girls would have a sample to refer to while we were painting.  She’s the one with the red/pink hair.  Then I painted the blonde one during the Paint Party.  I still want to go in and put something in her hair.  I was helping others finish up theirs so I didn’t quite finish.
