While working at Delilah’s Art & Gift Shop on Sunday I set up a table on the porch and painted.  I like to do that because people are curious and will ask questions about art and painting when they see you working on a piece.  This is a look at the progression of my Sunday painting.

SF all SF cows SFgoatsI arrived at Sassafras Farm yesterday afternoon to prepare for this weekend’s workshop.  The farm is the home to my friend, Suzanne McMinn of Chickens in the Road fame.  (Check out her blog here.)  I am excited.  The workshop is full and I am sure it is going to be  a great weekend of learning and fun!

The farm has a multitude of animals from goats, sheep, chickens, cows, horses to of course, dogs and cats.  There will be many opportunities for  photos to build my reference library for painting.  🙂

In the painting portion of the workshop we will be doing a canvas, landscape painting, as well as a gourd birdhouse.  I’ll show you the results tomorrow.

Bluebells J and L and MWe go to the Dog Park almost every morning and for the last week or so the Bluebells have been blooming along the path by the river leading to the park.  It’s beautiful.

Of course my “kids” like to take a look and a sniff and sometimes they aren’t so gentle so flowers get smushed.   So yesterday when they trampled some I picked them up and put them in a vase when we got home and took them to art class.

This is the little painting that I did inspired by the Bluebells.  They are happy, sweet little flowers.

IMG_20140405_222838I got a good start on this Geranium sitting in the window sill this past week.  I haven’t been able to complete it yet but hopefully I will find some time in the next few days and then I can show you a finished painting.   For all my painting students – can you see what’s missing?  Maybe a shadow under the window ledge?  And some weathering on the walls.  Heavier shadowing on the window frame…..and on and on.  😉

Cookie Jar Painting

Cookie Jar Painting

I am often asked how I find things to paint every day.  I never have any trouble finding something to paint.  There are just so many things all around that I want to try to paint.  From time to time I will set up an area with my camera and shoot lots of photos of  “common” things for reference photos.  I recently did this with a cookie jar that had been given to my parents as a wedding gift and that my mom gave to me years ago.  I always have fond memories of it because Mama always had it sitting on the breakfast bar in the kitchen with something good in it for us when we got home from school each day.  I treasure that cookie jar.

Speaking to Girl Scouts about art

Speaking to Girl Scouts about art

CAM07245Yesterday I was asked to speak to a group of Girl Scouts about being a full-time artist.  They were a great group of girls who toured the Blue Ridge Arts Council before our session and had several questions about art.  I was working on the demonstration painting for our 1st Saturday Paint Party so they watched as I completed the flowers.  They enjoyed it so much that they want to come back and do a little painting.  So we will meet again later in the month!

I did finish the demo painting for this Saturday’s Paint Party and there are still a couple of seats open if you want to join us and paint this little geranium painting.  Contact me today.
