Yesterday we started another session of Art Camp. This group, with young painters ages 8-13, learned about color mixing and created a color wheel as well as worked on learning to tint color and discover more about color value. We then applied what we learned to our first painting of the session, Claude Monet’s Pink Water Lilies. Nice work everyone. Can’t wait to see how you do today!

My New Little Girl

On my way to work a few weeks ago I stopped in at a local auction house as I had seen that they had a few old sewing machines listed. I have been on the look out for a Singer Featherweight ever since I saw the one that my friend Sandra brought to a sewing class last year. I had read about them but never actually been in the presence of one. I was in love and knew I had to find one for myself. As I walked up to the table at the auction house that held the two sewing machines I held my breath hoping this would be the day. Imagine my joy when I realized they were both Featherweights. The problem was I couldn’t stay for the auction. I had 15 people arriving for a paint party within the hour so I left a sealed bid on both machines…one machine was in good shape and the other not so much. I held my breath waiting to hear if I got one. When I finished work that day I still hadn’t heard anything so I went back by the auction and it was still going one. But low and behold, I had gotten one of the machines…the one in the better shape. I couldn’t wait to call my friends who work on antique machines and have them pick it up and check it out for me. They did and were just as excited as I was that I had found it.
Now I have it back all oiled and ready to sew. Now I can’t decide what to make first! It’s almost too beautiful to use but I know it’s too lovely not to use. These little workhorses are much sought after and very collectible. Mine is from 1946….they each have serial numbers so we know when it was made. Read more about them here. I LOVE IT!

Here is the result of the Leaf Casting class that I told you about yesterday. It turned out great! And it was so much fun learning something new. We used sand to support the leaf and then used Thinset to mold it and finally Rapidset for the strength layer. After it set over night we peeled the leaf off and here it is! Now we have to wait for it to cure and then we can paint it. Can’t wait!

Yesterday I took the morning off to take a class in Flint Hill at Mullany Art Studio. They offer a variety of exciting classes and I have wanted to go to one forever but seems I am always working when they offer them. But when they offered the Concrete Leaf Casting I wanted to give it a try. Kerrie and Candace did a great job explaining the process.
Here are some photos from what we accomplished in class. We go back this afternoon to complete the process. It was great fun working in a different medium. Can’t wait to see how it turns out.
There is loads of fun to be had at The Studio….almost every day! We have classes and paint parties for people of all ages. You saw the last few days the wonderful work that our young artists created. Well, this weekend we had our adult artists and friends working on beautiful paintings.
