There was the strong smell of skunk in my backyard. And that can only mean one thing…TROUBLE! Have you ever had a dog get sprayed by a skunk? Well, I did and I can tell you it is not pleasant.
Jeffie, who was the sweeting little guy that ever lived, jumped the back fence at our yard at the house and caught a skunk in his mouth.
YUCK!
And I tried all the old standbys that we used when I was a kid…namely washing him in tomato juice. It didn’t phase the stink.
So since we have everything at our fingertips with computers anymore, I searched for a skunk remedy. And here is what I found:
Mix together 1 quart of Hydrogen Peroxide (3%), 1/4 cup baking soda, and 1 teaspoon of liquid soap (like dishwashing soap). Spread over the dog and leave for 5 – 10 minutes. Rinse with water.
And it really works! Or it did for Jeffie. The only problem was that because Jeffie caught the skunk in his mouth, everytime he opened his mouth for the next 6 months the smell of skunk came out. Poor baby.
Ps. And yes, Jeffie was also a lab-basset mix and Jed looks very much like him.

I’ve never had a dog get sprayed by a skunk. However, with the way my two Danes love chasing wildlife, it’s a wonder it’s never happened. YIKES! Let’s hope I never need your recipe, Kelly.
