While visiting the Outer Banks on vacation we have driven from one end to the other just exploring and seeing the sights. One of the fun things was to see the different lighthouses. Here are some of the ones located there…Bodie, Currituck, and Hatteras.

Quick Editor’s Note: Larry the Lobster is now on display at the Blue Ridge Arts Council at 305 E. Main Street until October.  Stop in to see him.

Meet Larry the Lobster.  I ate him.  Well, I ate him several months ago on my trip to Newport.  He was delicious.  Now he’s just a memory, a memory in paint.  Larry the Lobster, oil on canvas, 9″x12″, available by contacting kwalker@doubledogdesigns.com .

This is Larry before I devoured him.  I have to say, he was VERY good!  Larry I am grateful for your sacrifice.

Space Shuttle 1So it’s Sunday and we are on our way home from this big “aviator” weekend of the Air Races in Reno and we have to make a quick stop in Amarillo for a company picnic with our hosts, the Smiths.  We land at the Amarillo airport and look out the window and what do we see????   The space shuttle!!!

Space Shuttle 2Absolutely amazing.  Keep in mind that I am with a group of pilots…all weekend they have gone to the airshow each day and drooled over airplanes and airplane equipment and now, here we are in the heart of Texas and what do we see?  The ultimate in aviation…the space shuttle.

I took Allen’s picture with it because I figured no one would believe we had seen it.

Space Shuttle 3So, of course, we delayed our trip out to the picnic for about 10 minutes so we could watch the shuttle take off, piggybacking on this HUGE airplane.  There were a few others around taking pictures but overall I guess it is something that NASA doesn’t advertise for safety reasons.  So we watched it take off.  I even got a minute long video of it.  (Sorry I can’t post it  here for you to see. 😦 )

When we left Reno we flew around Area 51, flew right over Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon and then we land and to see the Space Shuttle, all within a two hour period of time.  Can you imagine????

I tell you, the Smith’s are quite the hosts.  When they plan a trip, they really plan a trip!!!!   Thanks again for all the fun.

Cactus

Cactus 2Cactus amazes me.  I don’t understand how it works exactly but it is beautiful in its own way.

I especially like the Prickly Pear cactus seen here.

Cactus 3Cactus makes a nice foreground for landscape shots in the west.

Cactus 4I love the way it looks in the landscape of the west.

One thing I didn’t get a shot of was the cactus trees.  And the amazing thing I learned about cactus trees is that they are at least 50-70 years old before an arm shoots out.  I never thought about them being that old.  And we passed several “cactus forests” north of Phoenix but didn’t get to stop for photos.  Too bad.  😦

The Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon 1I’ve always wanted to see the Grand Canyon.  Everyone who had been to it said that it was amazing….not possible to describe…you had to see it to believe it.

And they were right!

Grand Canyon 4It was a beautiful clear day when we were there and you could see for miles and miles.  There were huge puffy clouds hanging perfectly over the cliffs.  It was almost fake looking.  I said that the same people who perpetrated the fake “moon landing” must have painted a huge screen and hung it up here for people see.  It just didn’t look real.

Grand Canyon 8But it was real.  We had a great view of the Colorado River running through it.  Unbelievable!

Tower 2The tower overlook at the southeast end of the canyon gave wonderful views of the canyon not to mention that it was quite photogenic itself.

Allen & Bob Sightseeing 1Allen and Bob didn’t miss an opportunity to read about all that we were seeing.

Sally 2And Sally risked standing on the edge of the world!

Back from Vacation

Red Rock Hotel ViewJust back from the Labor Day Weekend in Sedona with friends.  I hope to post some red rock paintings soon.  Saw many wonderful views and landscape there.  It’s hard to believe how different everything there looks compared to the Shenandoah Valley.

Bell Rock 3We hiked each day.  Bell Rock and Cathedral were right down the road from our hotel so we were able to hike there easily.  We saw rattlesnakes on one walk.  I HATE snakes!!!

LizzardI’m not crazy about lizards either but we saw lots of them so I had to get at least one shot.

Catheral 1So many nice landscape views with the arid countryside in the foreground.  I hope to paint many of them.

Tomorrow, our day at the Grand Canyon.  Awesome!
